Netflix indicted by Texas grand jury over 'lewd visual material' in Cuties

Netflix has defended the controversial film Cuties after it emerged the streaming giant is facing a criminal charge in Texas over the movie’s allegedly “lewd” depiction of children.

Cuties follows an 11-year-old Senegalese girl living in Paris who rebels against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a “free-spirited dance crew”.

A grand jury in Tyler County, Texas, has indicted the company on the charge of “promotion of lewd visual material depicting a child”. The indictment claims Cuties appeals to the “prurient interest in sex” and the material holds “no serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value”.

A Netflix representative told PA: “Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualisation of young children. This charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”

This same film was in the news in mid August for much the same reason, except then it was about the promotional poster(s) used to promote the film in the USA.

The "made for America" poster                     The original one

You can see from the new poster that it was all about sexualizing young girls. It looks like the photo was taken in a go-go bar. The director claims she never saw the new poster until after all the controversy flared up.

Keep in mind that the director's intent was to show how decadent "western" culture is. She claims she saw some young girls dancing provocatively at a block party (in France). It seems she was shocked by what she saw and the message the girls were sending so she decided to make a film about and spent a year and a half interviewing young girls.

"The film is a cry of alarm, she says, a nod to girls of 13 or 14 “followed by 400,000 people just because they posted pictures of themselves in thongs”."

“The main message of the film is that these young girls should have the time to be children, to enjoy their childhood, and have the time to choose who they want to be when they are adults. You have a choice, you can navigate between these cultures, and choose from the elements of both, to develop into your own self, despite what social media dictates in our society.”

What a lot of nonsense.

Isn't it interesting that people the world over seem to be turning a blind eye to Instagram and Tik Tok where after a few seconds searching, you can see pre-teen girls wearing much less and dancing far more provocatively - WHICH IS WHAT THIS FILM IS ABOUT!!!!!!

So if anyone is going to be taken to court it should be these 2 big companies for facilitating the kids and encouraging them to dance like sluts online for all and sundry.

And if anything else - the parents of our children should be slapped in the face and told to wake up to what their kids are doing online.

The same parents complaining about this rather tame and boring film, are the same ones hollering about child porn etc. None of it makes sense.

Much ado about nothing, although they've given a lot of free publicity to what sounds like a terribly boring film (must admit to not having seen it).  How they can say a mainstream movie release doesn't have artistic merit is anyone guess.  Only in Texas.   Hopefully costs and punitive damages for malicious prosecution are awarded to Netflix.

I did not see this film but by reading the comments herein, I would say the movie attempts to expose the pornification of our modern culture. Opinions seem to vary as to whether or not the movie conveys its message successfully.

If the young children in the film look sexy to the viewer, could that possibly be evidence the viewer is a latent pedophile? Are we far from the day when people will be arrested for what they think?
