When I switch on my PC the monitor screen flickers and becomes white so badly at times that I can not see any thing, this usually lasts about an hour and every thing settles down.

So do I need a new monitor or is there some problem with the PC

A couple of questions and thoughts:

1. What kind of monitor and how old is it?

2. If you have access to another monitor - plug out the old monitor and plug in the replacement. If BOTH monitor show the SAME problem, then you have your answer.

CRT monitor???

Try another to be sure, but I suspect you're right and a replacement monitor is in order :o

To be honest, with the cost of a replacement repairing a dead one is not really worth the hassle unless it's a fairly new or quality unit. My last CRT died so I simply gave it to the local PC dealer, AFAIK he fixed and sold it. Gave me a good deal on some RAM so I'm happy and he's happy.

Its an hp pavilion mx704 that I bought new in 2004, the monitor is working perfectly right now and I am also beginning to suspect the problem may be with the UPS

I do not have a back up to check the PC and I am some distance from town so I do not want to drag all this stuff around.

Maybe I can find someone locally to take a look at this for me

Thanks for the replys

You could try the engineering fix, a good solid thump on the side, it's amazing what you can discover with this technique :o

Looks like a pretty nice monitor so a trip to the menders may be in order.

If you suspect your UPS simply remove it and see if the fault persists, although I'm not sure what failure mode could be responsible unless you're near the limit of what the UPS can supply.
