Great escapes the ‘E’ way

It’s long been said that the best way to explore any rich cultural community is on foot or by bike. But long tours can be tiring especially in the tropical heat and so Bangkok’s “tourists” are turning to a new way of getting around – the electric scooter.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen greater interest in adventure and outdoor packages, perhaps because people still feel uncomfortable going into crowded places. Whatever the reason, the opportunity to ride an e-scooter has come at the right time.

Like bicycle tours, e-scooter tours have been around for some time and mostly target foreign tourists wanting to see the city’s most famous sights. These days, though, the e-scooters are increasingly popular with local residents eager to try out new activities in their hometown.

Are these actually legal on Thai roads or sidewalks?

Who cares? Apart of course for potential tea money to you know who.

Right, there is problem already with all the motorcycles on the sidewalks in BKK. And now adding up that with this <deleted>? And the hospitals will get more work same as in Copehagen and other cities. We have seen huge increase of leg and head injuries in Europe.

I saw a guy riding along the road on one the other day.

He had a helmet etc... but he placed himself in a very precarious position being the slowest on the road with lots of cars trying to get passed - he seemed oblivious.

Wheels too small to comfortably ride the rough pavement, he was on the road going about 15-20kmh - the danger was presented by two lanes of ‘other vehicles’ squeezing past him, almost squeezing him off the road into the gutter.

I saw a coupe of cars pass him leaving a few inches space, it would be so each for a car to catch his elbow with the wing mirror.

Thus: These electric scooters are too fast for the pavements, the pavements are generally too erratic for the small wheels. The roads too dangerous.

They would be good in areas such as Bang Kachaow and Pak Kret...  or much quieter out of city area’s - but certainly not in busy traffic.

That is why the original question requires an intelligent answer.

And a bicycle would be...... Better or worse.
