BANGKOK (NNT) - For World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year, the Department of Mental Health (DMH) continues to promote mental wellness and emotional self-awareness to prevent mental issues occurring among members of the general public. The department has this year teamed up with the police to help suicidal persons signaling their distress online.

A Deputy Minister of Public Health, Satit Pitutacha has launched World Mental Health Day, observed by the Department of Mental Health every year on 10th October.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health has on this occasion stressed cooperation between the Department of Mental Health and the police’s Crime Suppression Division (CSD) to help prevent the suicide of people expressing their distress online.

In this campaign, DMH officials and the police work together to offer help and assistance to persons with suicidal tendencies. The campaign has successfully prevented suicide in 70 cases in the past year, each case taking less than three hours of consultation.

The DMH has found some 53,000 Thai people have signaled thoughts of suicide in their social media posts. These posts overall reach the eyes of some 5.3 million followers.

The DMH suggests that social media users should inform the DMH and CSD to help save lives. One of the ways to reach them is by calling the 1323 Mental Health Hotline.

The DMH Director General Dr Panpimol Wipulakorn said today the department has placed a high priority on suicide prevention and treatment of affected persons, while continuing to help the general public pass through difficult time.

She has revealed the number of suicide cases in Thailand has grown by 20 percent since the COVID-19 outbreak.

World Mental Health Day was first celebrated on 10th October 1992 as an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health. It has since become an international day of mental health awareness and education.

Managed to prevent 70 cases...that's what I would call wild guessing.

And what kind of problem/illlness takes only 3h to solve?

I would truly like to know how many psychiatric wards there are in Thailand. How many mental health clinics with trained staff, how many competent counselors, etc etc

In other news, governments, experts, and media bombard the public of nations worldwide with the message that they must wear masks, not interact with other humans, and better still remain indoors and isolated or they all surely die from a virus with a 99.96% survival rate.  Details on News at 11.
