PTT promises full compensation to Samut Prakarn gas explosion victims

PTT Plc will compensate 100 per cent of damage suffered by victims of a gas pipe explosion in Bang Bo district of Samut Prakarn province on Thursday afternoon, the company said.

 

Three people were killed, 52 injured, while nine houses and 20 vehicles were damaged.

 

Several fire engines spent around an hour to control the blaze, which originated from PTT’s underground gas pipe and covered the area of around 1km, forcing local residents to evacuate the area immediately, including students and staff from the local Preng Wisuttha Tipbodee School. The school building was also found to be damaged, but it is still not clear if the fire was the cause.

 

 

“The company is sending a team of experts to investigate the cause and estimate the damage, while the company has an insurance with Dhipaya Insurance to cover the damage,” said Theera Phudphong, the PTT’s corporate social responsibility officer.

 

“Bang Bo and Bang Sao Thong district authorities will provide temporary lodging for those whose houses were damaged.”

Bang goes the no-claims bonus...?

PTT don't have the best record of fixing things properly....The Montaro rig oil leak in 2009 was plain shoddy until international pressure mounted on them...then the rig caught fire and took experts eventually come on the scene to douse the fire and plug the well properly.

They should compensate all that have been affected, they're a government enterprise, but no doubt there'll be many arguments in the mean time!

The Montara spill was about 80% Seadrill and 20% PTT fault, 20% to PTT as their company man was not on top of the situation, probably appointed as a mate rather than experience.  The fire started after the second rig was in position and drilling an intercept well. Fire started due to static when they started trying to inject cement subsea into the casing, did not get enough of a seal or enough volume of cement, blew out of the open well head and up she goes. On this one there was something about a truck dumping soil in an early report. You can guarantee the full story will never come out. I suspect old pipeline 20years plus with corrosion, then maybe the truck caused movement.  We shall see.

W'orld wide problem.

I the past welded fabrications of any kind were subject to full 100% inspection using various methods employed in QC.

As time went on the 'bean counters' started looking at the cost of QC. The thing about full QC is that it shows up problems that cost more money. To reduce that cost inspection rates started to drop, eg originally 100% of welds would be MPI tested for surface cracks and each crack repaired, slowly it became 50% of welds tested and now 10% is not unusual. If a problem is found in that 10% then another 5% are tested and if no more problems found then it is assumed all the welds are ok. ( MPI =  magnetic particle inspection ). Other inspection methods have gone the same way.

As I said this is world wide now, not limited to one particular country.
