BANGKOK (NNT) - The Loy Krathong festival will be celebrated on October 31 this year. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is aranging an event encouraging people to take part in Loy Krathong activities in new normal circumstances. The event aims to protect people from contracting COVID-19 and limit waste by asking members of the Thai public to float only one krathong basket per family.

The event will take place at two venues: Rama VIII Bridge in Bang Phlat district on October 31, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Ong Ang canal, from Han Bridge to Phanuphan Bridge, from October 29 to 31, starting at 5 p.m.

The two venues have set up areas for people to float their baskets safely, to preserve Thai tradition and appreciate the value of water in their daily lives. This year, participants are advised to practice social distancing and wear protective masks to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The BMA will open 30 public parks across the city for people to celebrate Loy Krathong until midnight. Security officers will be deployed, with a command center being set up to oversee Loy Krathong activities in Bangkok this year.

The administration warned that anyone caught using fireworks in public parks during Loy Krathong will face up to three years in prison, or a 60,000-baht fine, or both. Anyone caught using any type of Chinese firecracker will face up to three months in jail, or a fine of 6,000 baht, or both. Security personnel will monitor activities on 37 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at various venues and in public parks.

Is that one of the new environmentally unfriendly synthetic polystyrene krathongs he has there?

It appears to be made of ice cream cones, which will fall apart in water (though the residue might be kind of gooey for a while).
