US cuts $817 million in trade preferences for Thailand under GSP

The United States is suspending $817 million in trade preferences for Thailand under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme due to a lack of sufficient progress in providing the US with "equitable and reasonable market access" for pork products.

The decision made by US President Donald Trump was announced by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on Friday.

The USTR said that despite 12 years of bilateral engagement, Thailand had yet to provide the US with equitable and reasonable market access for pork products, as outlined in a 2018 petition from the National Pork Producers Council requesting removal of GSP benefits.

GSP eligibility will be revoked for approximately one-sixth of Thailand’s GSP trade, representing $817 million in US imports under the GSP programme in 2019. The decision is effective from December 30, and will close the review option for Thailand.

Hats off to the USA, I'd have told them to go get knotted way , way way before 12 years

  • I love it. Reciprocal treatment coming to these cheating Asian countries.

  • Why would Thailand want to import hormone laden pork ?   Surely, they have enough of their own!!

"Surely, they have enough of their own!!"  Not necessarily true!  With on the table and under the table pork sales to China causing a constriction in supply and there is still a high demand for pork in Thailand domestic market...which has pushed price up in the shops.  What was 98baht/kg a year ago is now 130 baht/kg!

The Thai's must have known POTUS would act on behalf of his beloved farmers.

Good, now the common ppl can eat laap moo.

Easily managed they will just jack up the price of wine ecig fines and baked beans ????

Thay may be the case but I would of thought they had better options then to import US pork.

So the pork barrel will be reduced in the trough this country fills it's pockets with and, instead the people will be gouged more as the prices will increase because of lesser product.  Price increases on the horizon on tap for other imports.

Maybe some hickory smoked bacon would be nice.....

It's lucky that with it's capable government led by the popular  Gen. Prayuth, Thailand's economy is in excellent shape and thus doesn't need any 'favours' from the US. Tourism and manufacturing, for example, have never been better. ????

Without wanting to defend Trump, who I suspect doesn't even know where or what is this thing called Thailand. Isn't the role of any Government in the world, to act in defense of their own people?

Just what Thailand needs, more pork.  Can't wait to see the upcoming prices for a bottle of Jack Daniels or Franks hot sauce.  Glad I just bought 8 gallons.

Now let's start on reasonable market access for California wine.

China delenda est (thanks to Cato the Elder)

Thailands been playing game for years, now watch the second half, Trump is not the person you want to pee off in a trade war.

More ammunition to oust the PM

I think Thailand  has enough tasty pork. What Thailand needs is some American Beef. We could probably sell them some Deer for a dollar a pound.

And America isn’t a cheating underhand nation regarding trade?

The statistics have been put up on TVF plenty of times. The US has lower average tariffs than just about every other nation out there. Lower than ASEAN, China, Japan, the EU.

And why not the other five-sixths?

Now lets Thailand cancel the preference treaty which allows USA citizens to own 100% of a normal company and some other perks.

That's an idea, we can introduce them to mountain oysters.

In a country that produces very good pork at good prices, why on earth does the US think we will buy their pork at double the prices & more, It is not even as good

Every country should hammer Thailand until they play on an even playing field and drop all the stupid tariffs they impose on imported goods !
