Thai trade bodies cheer for Biden presidency

Thai business associations are cheering for Joe Biden to grab the keys to the White House from President Donald Trump on hopes over trade deals.

Thai Feed Mill Association president Pornsilp Patcharintanakul said if Biden wins the ongoing vote count, the global economy would benefit from a realignment of US policy with international trade regulations.

"Thailand would gain from de-escalation of the US-China trade conflict, which would boost many businesses’ confidence in trading," he said.

"Meanwhile, Biden [as president] would end the Covid-19 outbreak as quickly as possible. If the US can contain the spread of the disease, the economy will recover."

He added that Biden would drive the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), adding that Thailand, which is not yet a member, should formulate a clear policy on this trade deal.

"Also, we expect a Biden presidency to reconsider the [suspension of] Generalised System of Preferences [GSP] privileges for Thai products because the US stands to gain less from exporting pork to Thailand than it does from Thailand importing its soybean meal," he added.

The US last month halted GSP tax breaks on Thai agricultural products in retaliation for Thailand not opening its pork market.

Thai Shrimp Association president Somsak Paneetatyasai said the result of the US presidential election would not affect Thai shrimp exports to the US as these were not covered by the GSP.

"If Trump wins, Thailand will benefit from the strong relationship between the Trump and Prayut governments," he said.

"If Biden wins, the US-China trade conflict will ease as he would find other ways to negotiate with China."

Whatever the election result, he expects the US to keep Thailand in Tier 2 of its annual Trafficking in Persons report.

Thai Frozen Foods Association president Poj Aramwattananont said the election outcome would not affect the export of frozen tuna and shrimp to the US because Thailand did not have tariff privileges on these products.

I don't think the Biden group would necessarily go spineless on the Chinese at this point. This is the one major point I hope he keeps a backbone for. The Chinese dirty trickster commies need to be slapped and slapped hard, not the opposite. Russia loves Trump, China thinks they like Biden.

They own Biden's kid already.

Imagine the dirt (photos) they have on that crackhead.

Maybe he can follow in Trumps footsteps and  pursue licensing deals and open a bank account in China too.

The  $188,561.00  Trumps LLC  paid in China for 2013 -2015  local taxes was considerably larger than the  $750.00 Dollars he paid to the US Government for 2016,2017 income taxes.

The Times said Trump’s tax records show that he has invested at least $192,000 in five small companies created specifically to pursue projects in China over the years. Those companies claimed at least $97,400 in business expenses since 2010, including some minor payments for taxes and accounting fees as recently as 2018, the Times reported

"It won't be easy"

Some are predicting the same situation that occurred at the end of the Obama administration

where every effort was made by the Republicans to block anything sourced by a Democrat. We'll see how this pans out .

To paraphrase Cato the Elder, China delenda est.

They will take over with their women.

That's why they are kept trim and pretty.

IMO, Trump would be far more aggressive to their international trading partners.....balance of payments would be pushed to equalise....tariffs would like be introduced on many imports to ensure local content grows.....it would no doubt be pretty bad news for Thailand, however, Biden is an unknown really....and it may be worse!

I hope it would be worse because it's time the thieves here started playing on a level playing field and drop all the crazy Tariffs on imported goods.

What they mean is they hope Biden will ignore the unfairness and allow Thailand to continue to screw imports so that Thailand benefits.

Which is why they just might be in for a big surprise. Obama had restrictions and downgrades put on ties with Thailand because of the coup. Trump looked the other way because Prayut flattered him. But now that the professionals are back in charge at the State Dept. I wonder if they are going to be anxious to let up on a country whose government suppresses the opposition and makes its political parties illegal, denies the right to political free speech, and whose ideals for the future seem more in alignment with the nineteenth century than the twenty-first. And, most importantly, has all but formally declared itself as a Chinese satellite. In the Congress, there are both Republicans and Democrats who do not look favorably on these sorts of things. Foreign and trade policy regarding China is already coming into bipartisan agreement. Thailand risks being swallowed up in that, too.

And here you see cluelessness in action. One of the top four states in pork production is North Carolina, an important swing state in American presidential elections and almost a tossup in senate races. So, whose side do you think Biden and the Democrats are going to come down on, Thailand or North Carolina pork producers?

not a chance of increasing exports or good trade deals as long as the Baht keeps appreciating/strong,  if Thailand wants to improve exports and benefit from any future trade deals they have to depreciate the Baht, however if Biden wins the election the USDollar may depreciate as well.... double whammy

You can break out your napkins and cry foul all day but It's over . That cloudy red Republican sky has turned to a clear blue Democratic hue.

It was an embarrassment to tell people that I came from a Democratic country that was completely controlled by  minority interests . The majority of Americans got tired of looking like idiots worldwide

and voted to give Trump one of his most beloved expressions :
