A recent poll shows that a great majority of people consider winning a lottery just a matter of luck, uninfluenced by the superstitious practices many people fall prey to.

The Nida poll showed that 70 per cent of respondents considered winning a lottery a matter of personal luck, 37 per cent thought that expecting sacred practices to help was being naive, while 36 per cent said lucky numbers from celebs was just a marketing trend.

The Nida Poll on "Lucky number: luck or lie" was conducted between November 11-13 by the National Institute of Development Administration, and surveyed 1,320 people aged more than 15 years old nationwide.

The poll also took people's opinion on news of sacred things or strange events at various places that give lottery numbers and lucky numbers obtained from celebrities, singers, and actors.

When asked for their opinion on news of sacred or strange events at various places giving hint of lucky lottery numbers:

- 37.12 per cent of people said it was stupid;

- 27.50 per cent said it was an opportunity for a fortune;

- 20.68 per cent said it was a marketing strategy to generate a trend;

- 16.21 per cent said they believed in sacred lucky numbers or "the incident";

- 2.73 per cent said it was a personal belief;

- 0.68 per cent did not answer or ignored the question.

Asked about news being published on people winning a lucky number from a sacred or strange event in various places:

- 70.61 per cent of respondents said it was an individual's luck;

- 22.58 per cent said it was just a coincidence, but it was credulous;

- 7.58 per cent said it was a marketing strategy to generate a flow;

- 4.62 per cent said it was lucky, whether sacred or a strange incident;

- 3.48 per cent said it was an impulse to buy or want to ask for a lucky number;

- 1.29 per cent said it was a strangely interesting thing.

Regarding lucky lottery numbers obtained from celebrities, singers, or actors:

- 36.29 per cent of respondents said it was a marketing strategy to generate a trend;

- 31.06 per cent said it was stupid;

- 27.95 per cent said it was an opportunity for a fortune;

- 6.29 per cent believed in celebrity lucky numbers

- 2.20 per cent did not know or did not care.

Asked about news of celebrities, singers and actors who won the lottery with their lucky numbers:

- 52.73 per cent said it was the luck of each person;

- 24.02 per cent said it was just a coincidence;

- 17.20 per cent said it was a marketing strategy to generate a trend;

- 6.44 per cent said it was the luck of the sacred that the stars looked up to;

- 5.45 per cent said it was an impulse to buy before the next period;

- 3.86 per cent said that it was a unique ability of an individual;

- 1.82 per cent said it was a strangely interesting thing;

- 0.68 per cent did not know or did not answer.

When asked about people buying lucky numbers based on sacred things, strange events or celebrities in the past one year, the survey found:

- 68.79 per cent said that they did not buy the idea;

- 17.88 per cent said they had never bought a lottery ticket in the past year;

- 11-14 per cent said that their purchase was influenced by a sacred thing;

- 5.30 per cent said their purchase was based on strange events;

- 2.73 per cent said they had once purchased based on what celebrities had said.

Asked whether the media should publish news about lucky numbers:

- 68.03 per cent said it was freedom of the press whether to continue to offer such news or to stop offering such news;

- 21.29 per cent said the media should stop offering such news;

- 9.92 per cent said the media should continue to offer the news;

I'd like to see the poll asking how many trust their amulet will protect them from accidents. Just a guess, 99.9% supersticious...?

They forgot to mention in which country they conducted the poll.

It couldn't possibly be Thailand!

Many Thais go to the temple and pray to Buddha for a lottery win .

Even as Buddhism teaches that the only way to stop suffering is to stop wanting something ...

The ones believing in hocus pocus are probably the New Creationists of the east. Dinosaurs walking with humans anyone?

No word on how many respondents were happy that the P.M. has not managed to bring the price of a ticket down to the correct level as he promised one of his first actions would be,

I do not participate, but the other half does. Last week she asked for a certain number, and the seller went away. After 5 minutes another seller appeared with the tickets. She asked for 110 baht per ticket ! When I asked why, she said "Special Nummer" so I asked why she did not keep them and take the winnings. Needless to say the Missus declined the transaction !!

It's a secret code ! The lottery has just announced what the next set of lucky numbers will be by using that Nida Poll. ("Nida" sounds like "Need a", doesn't it. Hmmm, could that be the code word to alert certain people ?)

The secret is, each of the numbers quoted is a "lucky" number !
For example, from the first set of statistics:

37.12 per cent = lucky numbers 37 and 12

27.50 per cent = lucky numbers 27 and 50

20.68 per cent  = lucky numbers 20 and 68
2.73 per cent = lucky numbers (0)2 and 73

0.68 = lucky number 00 and 68

Note that of all the numbers noted in that article, the number "20" appears 3 times. The number 68 shows up 5 times !!! (Rushing to find a lottery vendor now !) 29 appears 4 times.

Most Thais I know don't buy with the hopes of winning "the big one" - they buy hoping to win a 2 number combo (2,000 baht prize). Every time I joke about which ticket will win the 6 million baht prize they laugh.
And of course, every time someone sees my license plate it's "oh you should buy a ticket with that number". Never mind that those numbers have probably never come up in the 12 years I've had the bike, "next time" will be the lucky one !

And I know a whole lot of "Westerners" that are nearly as superstitious when it comes to buying lottery tickets, and they have a lot more options to buy as well. (Most of the Westerners I know use things like birthdates or phone numbers or the like when it comes to picking their numbers, not the number of branches on a dead tree that was uncovered in a flood.)

As long as there are uneducated, gullible people around, there will be slightly less gullible people to take advantage of them, including politicians as well as fortune tellers.

But of course none of this is ever seen in farangistan, now is it? :whistling:

Good luck!

I can see 68% twice, that's clearly a sign.

Can anyone here explain the Thai obsession with 'lucky, or  'good' numbers that i hear about so often?

I've lived here for a good few years, but never been able to understand the reasoning behind it..

And can read the number plate of a pick-up that's upside down in a ditch at 100 metres while passing at 90 kph.

Superstition.?

superstition is stupid. I always hop up and down 3 times on my right foot and turn around two times and yell "greatgooglymoogly" before I buy a ticket. That's logical, right? : )

Obviously they are in denial.

Yep, with all the holy fortune telling monks you would've thought Thailand would be the richest country in the world by now.

Some of it comes from Chinese superstition, like the number 8 being lucky. Not sure about the rest, but probably home grown. Some people find numbers in dreams... like if they dreamt about seeing 3 monks they would pick 3 as one of their lucky numbers... It's all a bit random.

You can't really believe polls any longer. Polls can be influenced by factors including the composition of the sample and the statistical algorithms and can be juked to reflect the pollster's own bias.
My experience living around Thais in both rural and urban settings, but especially in rural settings is that the majority of Thais consider winning a lottery as a function of luck very, very much influenced by superstitious and supernatural practices as well as karma.

Living by superstition is not a good philosophy but choosing for lottery tickets it is a fairly harmless practice.

But why is it considered headline news?

Stop drinking alcoholic beverages... lol

I always plays the same numbers, statistically they will come out one day...????

However reminds me of a news article that I read a number of years ago – at my age "a number of years" can be anything from a few and up to 30 – about a Brit that always played the same numbers in the weekly lotto, and his wife renewed the lotto-coupon. One week his numbers came out as winner – that was the week his wife had forgot to renew his lotto-coupon...????

There are not enough numbers on the lottery tickets to add up to all the monkeys I see on a daily basis. 5555555

Bought a car... gf used the red plate numbers and won. Most of the family did the same.... everyone happy with the only Farang in the village.

Picked a ripe papaya off a tree in our garden. Had numbers ingrained on its skin. Gf used them. Won. 2 weeks later half the village are up our ladder looking at the fruits. No more winners. No one happy with the only farang in the village.

Numbers off frogs, any fruit, car plates, dreams, parrot tasked with selecting numbers, temples, womens hairy legs, coffee stains, tea leaves, palms of someone's hands, leaves, dog poo.......
