A Suan Dusit poll reported on "Thai Eating Habits 2020".

The poll at the end of the year of the pandemic with all its economic hardship revealed the favorite dishes of Thais, changes in their behavior and spending.

Some 1,144 people were asked questions from December 1st to 3rd.

Favorite dish was Khao Kapao (meat fried with basil over rice, usually with a fried egg). In a list of preferences 57% chose this as their "hit menu" item while 51% went for noodles, 42% papaya salad or som tam, 39% Nam phrik/phak (spicy condiment with vegetables) and  38% Khao niaw moo ping (sticky rice with BBQ pork).

As regards behavioral changes when it comes to food people said they were broadening their choices, were more concerned about cleanliness and were increasingly washing their hands before eating.

Spending showed that 77% put a 300 baht ceiling on their daily food bill, 21% said they spent 300-500 baht and less than 1% said they spent between 500 and 1000 baht a day.

More than half of all Thais wanted to learn more about healthier eating and out of those using resources to widen their horizons when it comes to food YouTube was proving the most popular.

Also around 60% were thinking more about cooking themselves rather than buying in.

1 don't  get the percentage.  It's out of 100% right, so how can you 57%, 51%, 42%, 39% & 38%?  That totals 177% of the people surveyed.

Well, it appears there were quite a few gluttons participating in that survey, who order the full spread.

1,144 people in the survey can choose every choice they like. 57% of 1,144 people like Kaprao while 51% of 1,144 people like noodles.

It is 10-year-old student math. Why cant someone figure out?? Steryotype of farang with math is always true huh.

This was a truly remarkable survey. It revealed the fact that people spend according tho their means. Amazing. I've never heard of that before.

Exactly. Salary is 10,000 a month and they need a survey to realize people spend less than 300 b/day on food...

Maybe soon they'll come up with another survey to show that most people spend less than 1,000,000 baht a month on housing.

Thailand average is higher than 10,000 B per month.

Official figures in 2018 or 2019  is around  14,000-15,000 B per month.

Generally  real salary is slightly higher than the official one.

poorly worded translation.
obviously they don’t eat the same food every meal.
57% of people like eating Pad Kapao

51% of people eat noodles

etc.

Well it just so happens that the minimum wage is around 300 baht per day  so it doesn't surprise me that the large majority are spending less than 300 baht per day

The large majority of Thais are not on a 300 baht minimum wage. The vast majority are on higher than the minimum. The average wage is over 500.

300 baht per person per day is a lot of money to spend just on food.

No wonder I could see many fat Thai people around nowadays.

3 meals of Thai food is only around 120 baht per day.
