Ink removal tips?

Featured Replies

My friend's baby just scribbled on her plastic ID card. What's the best way to remove the ink?

Start with alcohol (liquid hand sanitiser) on a tissue, that will shift most markers even "permanent".

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Mineral spirits are worth a try.  WD-40, not sprayed on the card but on a piece of cloth can sometimes do wonders and finally, toothpaste which has fine abrasives, might work.

Eucalyptus oil on a tissue, may work as well as the other suggestions

I'm not sure about on plastic, but on fabric, lemon juice will usually remove ink. If you don't have lemon juice at hand, keep the fabric moist until you do.

  • Thanks. They all sound like good suggestions.

Acetone, otherwise known as nail polish remover, is the most effective solvent for almost all inks. Be careful with it though, it can attack some plastics.

In terms of increasing effectiveness, the order is hydrocarbons ( turpentine or WD40 ) alcohols ( methylated spirit ) and acetone. There are more exotic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile and dichloromethane, but these are only found in laboratories.

Acetone

I would avoid acetone until you've exhausted all the other rather less agressive solvents, it's very effective but it may also remove the dye-transfer printing on the card.

Agree, that's why I said to be careful with it.

The spray version of Soffell - the widely available (7/11) mosquito repellant will remove most things - including 'permanent' marker pen - a leaking bottle even managed to melt a pen in my bag.

I now use the cream version and just hope its safe - its the only thing I've found that works for me.

Reminds me of a Family Friend , drew a beard on his mates passport for payback (stag night)

The U.S officials were none too pleased, but let him in after some negotiation tactics.

Put a drop of sanitizer and see. These cards are laminated I think. So any thing printed on the card is below the lamination.

On second thought , as this appears to be a Thai ID card, you can get it replaced.

Just get a new id card perhaps?

Acetone...

Acetone is a solvent that might spoil the film surface of the ID-card.

Alcohol on a piece of soft cloth or tissue, or WD40's special ink remover stick, or eventually try with a bit of petrol/turpentine, or label/sticker-remover, on a piece of soft cloth or tissue.

It easy to renew a Thai ID-card at the amphor office, it might be an easier solution than solvents...????

Sorry, apologize...:wai:

Used nail polish remover on banknotes loads of times with no problem, so should be fine with an ID.

Totally agree, it's really not that difficult, nothing like the hassle we have to go through.
