Big jump in Covid-19 cases in Samut Sakhon, but situation 'not worrisome'

So how did she catch it in a country where there is no Covid cases unaccounted for and they caught everyone who crossed the borders illegally ?

It would seem  fairly obvious  the Thai woman  was probably infected by an undetected illegal immigrant. Given the  rather amazing ratio of  Myanmar laborers to local Thai I doubt the  majority would be illegals. Unfortunately the collective population of the area  is at risk of a local epidemic which with willing  co-operation  can be  contained. More so than the previous  event of the Casino workers who returned and scattered  across the country.

It is  even  quite possible the illegals in Samut Sakhon have skipped  back across the border to  avoid detection due to the focus on the area.

Bit of a worry, though suppose if any of the migrants are carriers and illegal, that they'll get back to Myanmar in quick time. And hopefully the others get tested or at least stay isolated.

I can't help thinking there will be pressure brought to bear on these migrant workers to be tested asap, hope so.

Be very interesting to see how this plays out.

I certainly hope that they do in fact have things under control, though I do find it worrying, even if they tell me I don't need to be. I recall how screwed up things were when there were cases all over the place and hope we can avoid that nastiness again.

We have been very fortunate thus far.

Would be a lockdown in Australia

“It is estimated that there are around 4,000 people living around the market

So, to date, 2,000 tested with 13 positive. Another 2,000 to test with possibly another 13 positive? So, if the total becomes 26 positive, how many more would have come into contact with these 26? - definitely "worrisome".

And will they provide the same amount of stuff every Day for the next 2weeks in order that ALL estimated residents are tested fully, and correctly.

2,500 of anything is not enough for One population test, as 4,000 people are estimated to live in he vicinity of this Wet Market, which means not all are going to be tested even once.

These Wet Markets seem to be a real hotbed of Infections ( Re-  Wuhan )

500 facemasks ?   Someone needs a rethink . All hands on deck . Nip this in the bud .No expense spared.

"If you reside near the market or are concerned, you can receive free testing at the mobile testing units."

.

That doesn't sound like pressure to get tested.

Samut Sakhon is adjacent to BK on the Gulf, far from any border. So where might the fish-lady have caught the ‘vid??? Was she a “foreign worker”? If so, had she travelled since February?

While there is no doubt money passed into hands for illegal crossings, there’s another aspect.

I heard from a friend Thais have to pay B1,500 for their 14-day quarantine. Can anyone confirm, please? Should be free for Thais, of course!

Now the virus has magically appeared in Samut Sakhon seafood market instead of the Wuhan seafood market? I hope there won't be another Wuhan type wave there.

The Wuhan market doesn't deal with seafood. Its 500 miles from the coast.

Wet markets are like open abbatoirs. Animals are sold live and many slaughtered on-site . And these types of premises are often the source of infections and spread.

The West is not that different. Covid outbreaks which spread very rapidly have occurred in 'meat processing' plants (fancy abbatoirs) all over Europe and the USA. They are not open to the public but the workers are part of that community. Even before covid, these places were never the healthiest places on Earth - dead animals and lots of blood are not good environments.

And will the xenophobia stop when  they test negative or just move on to anybody else that is not a Thai national to pin the blame on ?

The virus is caused by unclean farangs who have slipped into the country from Burma and Laos. Find them quickly.

It originated from a seafood market. Wuhan is situated along the Yangtze River where seafood is abundant.

Yes, it's free for Thai. But everyone can afford paying 1,500 baht which is chicken feed, it's not 15,000 baht.

Where is your evidence for this assertion? And what exactly do you mean by 'farang'? Aren't non white foreigners potential carriers? Just out of interest I would like to clarify something? Do you live in Thailand?

Quiet right, but what alternative does one suggest. It's be quiet happy to be locked away for Two weeks then locked away for ever 6 foot under, take your pick. It most imperative that one wears a mask.

Being locked away for 2 weeks has very little to do with keeping you 'well' or even alive

Anutin added that His Majesty the King has granted three biosafety vehicles to test local residents around the market, while the ministry has provided 2,500 viral transport medium tubes, 2,500 nasopharyngeal swabs, Rapid Ab test kits, 100 personal protective equipment suits, 200 waterproof gowns, 500 surgical masks, 100 face shields as well as other equipment to officers carrying out the testing.

So, that covers 1 market area.........
