Thai rice exports to hit lowest level in two decades

President of the association, Charoen Laothamatas, said it would be the first time that Thai exports would be lower than that of Vietnam, which is expected to export a total of 6 million tonnes.

 

Thai rice export has faced many obstacles, including higher price when compared to competitors.

 

The situation has been aggravated by the strengthening baht, he added.

 

Honorary president Chookiat Ophaswongse added that the value of the estimated 5.7 million tonnes of rice export this year would be Bt115 billion, down 12 per cent year on year.

 

Another reason for the low export is the shortage of containers for transporting rice, he added.

No, farmers will still grow rice ,as most can not do anything else ,it will be the exporters  facing the problem ,with stock they can not sell.

Which will mean lower prices for the growers ......againe.

The industry will be propped up by the new rice scheme laid out by this government so no worries ok.  Prayut has dusted of the Yingluck plan and is moving forward. I just wonder which minister will he doing the G to G rice sales and pocketing the money as they are not truly occurring.  Hmmmm....

There it is in a nutshell - I think the only reason to keep the Baht so high is to pay for all the military purchases and what about the people - SAD ..............!!!!!

Right, who would have thought you'll need them! Exports are at a record low and still there aren't enough containers? Sounds like a particularly lame excuse.

Not just rice exports, but all Thai exports will tank with a ridiculously high Baht.  Vietnam pegged the Dong to the Dollar at a competitive rate.  Thailand won’t peg the Baht until it rises another 10%, I reckon.  By then, the Thai-economy may collapse altogether.

Yes. There is a small village I know in Africa where they could, with the little they have, buy mucher cheaper rice but they are hanging on and saving, waiting for the arrival of expensive rice.

Hopefully this motivates them to diversify into crops that are less destructive to environment. ????

Not easy you can not just plant another crop in a rice field ,rice fields are designed  to keep water in, plant another crop in will just rot when the rains come.

The land needs braking up so water can get away ,not cheap most farmers do not have the equipment ,they will have to get someone in another cost .

Most rice fields are very infertile ,monoculture of rice over the years  has reducer soil fertility , so soil fertility will  have to be improved first ,not a thing that can be done overnight.

They are other crops equally destructive to the environment as you say, sugar cane ,is one growing eucalyptus trees .this year corn/maize ,the Fall Army Worm has taken its toll this year ,I know farmers that have sprayed they crop 4-6 times against the worm ,no spraying no corn ,makes Somchie spraying his rice crop once with his Knapsack sprayer pretty tame .
