Just had a look at Google maps. Helluva trip to reach Bangkok by sea from Myanmar. Around Singapore?

Perhaps Royal Thai Armed Forces spokesperson, Lt Gen Chaowalit Sangkarit learnt geography at the same school as those four illegal Chinese caught entering Thailand from Burma, claiming they were trying to make their way home to China.

Smoke and Mirrors.

They all walked into Thailand. the only water they went in was ankle deep, at best.

Exactly. Why take a boat when you can just walk into Thailand?

I was at Mae Sot at the border marked by the Moei "river". It's a bit of a misnomer as it is just a shallow brook perhaps 20 cm deep. The official border post was just about 2 km downstream. It was practically deserted, of course. On the other hand, I saw scores of Myanmar people simply wading through the brook to the Thai side or back into Myanmar. Each one was laden down with crates and cartons of goods whose contents they either bought or were about to sell. Those few Thai border guards that were there clearly seemed to be there on purpose and were on quite good terms with the Myanmarese small traders - especially (as I had the pleasure to observe) when they were slipped a 100 baht or so.

Met a nice Burmese guy who spoke good English. He said nobody in their right mind would use the official border crossing because they either would be fleeced for substantial tea money by the Thai border officials or - if they refused - they'd be slapped with high import (or export) taxes plus a "day pass fee". And if they got back into Myanmar, there'd be another payout round for the Burmese officials. "It's like a bottomless money pit if you do it the lawful way," my buddy explained.

It's christmas. They're playing a variation of 'pass the parcel'. It's known here as 'pass the blame'.

On countless occasions, Thailand has been named as a major player in human trafficking, illegal fishing and slavery, by credible international organizations. Of course you never hear about any of that here. At least openly.

Few things happen here at a major level, without the top guys in control knowing about it, and getting a piece of it.

These are mere "puff pieces" meant to deceive the most naive amongst the population.

I don't buy it. Do any of you?

They stood the submarine vertical, having watched Elon Musk's tin can Mars rocket launch.

And, tomorrow...  Thai Navy suspects illegal workers entered Thailand by land.  Pass that buck!

Could they have tunnelled their way in? I have a sneaking suspicion they rode in in the back of a Thai pickup!

Waved thru' by the welcoming committee busy waving B1000 notes as gesture of good will.

Well Thailand is an enclave of China so they were on the right track...

You mean they should be looking for someone with soiled trousers?

May be a long way.  But I wonder if the fact that they were found in a seafood market could be a clue...

Corruption. Industry owners pay lots of money to corrupt officicials on many levels. Nothing new. Thailand is corrupt from top to bottom. Same in many places around the world. The corrupt say they will stop corruption.

Thai Navy:  Yes, we acknowledge that 40% came in from the sea. We need more submarines to control the coasts. However, we have intelligence reports that over 65% came in over land.

Thai Air Force: We have reports that some flew in by small planes and hang gliders. We need a dozen stealth fighters to be able to sneak up on them to catch them.

Thai Navy: We would like to help the Air Force so include money for an aircraft carrier.

Thai Army: Now wait a minute, this blame game didn't go as planned. We need more tanks, ballistic missiles and expensive watches.

PM : It's obvious that I need to go on a shopping trip up north to buy much more equipment so that we can secure our borders from the foreign plague that is trying to  denigrate the purity of Thailand.

And that's precisely because they "do their best", as the OP puts it.

Wow, is this open jealousy between the Military forces?  Army jealous of the Navy and

Marines, and everybody jealous of the Air force, who only get their boots wet walking to

their aircraft.  Wow...

Geezer

need to stop all those illegal immigrants at bay before they will kill us all !!!!

I took this photo a few years ago - hardly difficult to cross from Myanmar...
