Social Security COLA Adjustment Letter

Featured Replies

Just wanted to let you know that I received today here in Khon Kaen, my COLA adjustment letter from social security.

This is what I show immigration as to where the source of my monthly deposits come from abroad when I seek my marriage extension.

Hope everybody gets theirs.

I was beginning to wonder when mine would get here.

You getting yours today makes me think mine should show in the next few days.

Next month it will be the 1099 to get.

Just received it.

Merry Christmas from the SSA today.

The wife and I got ours in the mail here in Bangkok on 24 Dec, but we had already downloaded them from our SSA online accts on 8 Dec.   Happy Holidays.

Edit: And we rec'd email notice of the COLA notices being available for downloaded on 28 Nov....it's just we dragged our feet until 8 Dec in logging onto our online accts to download the COLA notices.

In my SSA online acct there is a notice regarding 1099 availability.   Below is a snapshot of the notice.

And I've always found it strange SSA doesn't make them available for download until after Jan 31 although they are actually available sooner.  Although the SSA mails 1099s to all beneficiaries, whether having an online acct or not,  I guess the SSA wants online acct holders and non-acct holders to receive their 1099 approx the same time by delaying 1099 availability for download for online acct holders....this effectively gives the mailed copies a head start to where they arrive about the same time as they become available online.  SSA just treats 1099 distribution different from other notices like the annual COLA notice.

That is good if you have a SSA online account setup. I cannot use it since I don't have a verifiable US address.

Another problem for the cola letter and 1099 is that I need the original that comes in the mail to use when I apply for my extensions. I am sure they would not accept a printout of it without a stamp from the embassy that of course is not going to happen. The mailed ones have been accepted for 2 years now. I think the 18" long two sided originals look good to them since there is no viable way to forge a copy of one.

Trying to set up a SSA account using the new option the have on their sign in page now. (https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/)

So far I have been able to get as far as setting up two factor verification using my my mobile number here and uploading a copy of my passport photo page but I cannot get to the next step of taking a selfie they want. When get that far I cannot enter my Thai mobile number since it only has the selection for a US phone number. I have sent a message about it but no answer yet from them.

I will be trying later to login on my tablet, take a pic of my passport and do the selfie that way if I can use my number here to it.

Edit: Tried it and had same problem.  Only a US mobile number could be used.

The SSA office in Manila has both mailed, and emailed, my 1099-SSA.

The email PDF is locked, and requires a password to unlock, the password comes in a separate email.

I sent the request to the general ssa email  [email protected]

So, it looks like, at least for some of us, we got thirteen SocSec payments in 2020. Maybe for those who have it deposited in Thailand that wil reflect a 2021 payment date?

My December, 2020 payment, which has the COLA adjustment, was deposited into my account (in the U.S.) on 12/31/2020, as was stated on my COLA letter. Deposit was processed in 2020, unlike my second stimulus deposit ($600) which is still processing, and should show a deposit date in 2021.

My December, 2019 payment was deposited on 1/3/2020.

May have tax impacts for some? I might have forgotten it had I not noticed the deposit date.

It was paid early since the 3rd is on a Sunday and the 1st was a holiday. It will not be included in the amount on your 1099 for 2020.

For people using a bank here it will be deposited on the 4th since the 31st was a bank holiday.

I just got a letter from the Social Security in Khon Kaen, asking if I want to change my designated hospital.

You must be talking Thailand Social Security medical coverage vs U.S. Social Security.
