CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin

Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin apologised on Thursday for sparking public uproar with his threat of prison for people who conceal their travel information.

Netizens vented anger after Taweesin announced that people might be jailed for not installing the MorChana contact-tracing app on their phones. Social media users pointed out that many people don’t have smartphones capable of running apps.

Taweesin responded by apologising for the confusion on his personal Facebook. He clarified that the legal penalty only applied to Covid-positive individuals in the 28 “red” provinces who have no records of travel, including on the MorChana app. The penalty – up to two years in jail and/or a maximum fine of Bt40,000 – would be strictly applied in the five locked down provinces of Samut Sakhon, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, he said.

The MorChana app identifies the Covid status of users according to four colour codes – from green for low risk to red for high risk – and tracks their location.

Popular Facebook medic Mor Lab Panda (aka Parkpoom Dejhutsadin) said on Thursday afternoon that Taweesin had assured him that Covid patients who do not own a smartphone will not face charges if they cooperate with health officials. Parkpoom said the CCSA just wanted to encourage people to install the application as a powerful tool to investigate and track timelines.

in common sense world,  hard to make something a law if everyone isn't provided it.  Ie, the phone and the phone service and the monthly internet costs.

They eliminating smart phone costs and phone bills for everyone?

They cannot mandate that everyone has a smart phone. Many people cannot afford such a phone. Secondly that is an infringement on our human rights. We are not sick and even if we were there are treatments that are 100% effective without taking dangerous untested vaccines. The PCR test has been thorourly debunked as a means of testing for a virus and is a tool used to create oppression. Many government officials and industrialists are being sued in a class action suit in Germany and US for the losses to businesses and individuals in those countries.

You have fallen for the scare tactics, so kudos to the man, it works.

I'm amazed at how paranoid and scared of authority many foreigners are.

I would not call a basic willingness to comply with meaningful instructions paranoid nor scared of authority.

Apart from your mistaken assessment of my mental state you unfortunately did not answer any part of my questions, so I assume you do not know either.

The alternative at all public establishments is to sign the paper and give contact number on entry and exit timing noted. Doesn’t THAT constitute a travel history. And before we say what about traveling THROUGH a red district? - if we don’t stop we don’t infect. Get a grip guys, let’s contribute positively to this effort not just be negative and look for faults huh?

Look you guys it's a part of life in NZ nowadays, I don't have the NZ tracer app on my phone yet as you can sign in anywhere. Most people still scan the app when shopping even though there is no lockdowns in the country and you don't have to, but people still scan in and sign in and everyone uses hand sanitiser supplied free everywhere.

On the whole I was very surprised as I have been living in Los for a few years now, the people just behaved really well and still behave well as they don't want another break out.

This could happen anytime but things are going well now, it's summer very hot people are moving all over the country and now there are quarantine free flights to a few states in Australia.

The next bubble to open will be the Cook Islands.

Lucky we have a mote around us and no leaky borders.

Thailand seemed to be doing well I was hoping to return mid year but that looks hopeful now.

I sincerely hope that Thailand reigns this in.

I was always suspect that the borders would be the source of a new outbreak, but what a job Prayuts boys did on the borders, and the selfish greedy Myanmar slave trader's and exploiters have now flown a kemakaze C19 into Samut Sakhon, and with the help of the Chinese owned Tachilek casino gamblers and working girls freely crossing the border..... UNOTICED BY IMMIGRATION, POLICE OR ARMY, then let the real show begin.

The only thing you can say is they have been lucky so far, but this time the horse may not be able to be reigned in.

Stay safe take heaps of vitamin D and C, and keep healthy, good luck.

Nothing to do with status, other people are not allowed to have a different point of view evidently .....

Dear taweesin.

Can I please advise you that you should be aware that you are a government official that are

relied upon by the general public to advise them of important matters that may/will affect their well-being.

In so much the information you supply MUST be accurate.

Please keep that in mind.
