BBC defends new show Pooch Perfect following animal welfare concerns

The BBC's new reality series Pooch Perfect has proven to be a veritable tonic for many viewers, but the dog grooming competition has prompted concern from the RSPCA over its focus on the aesthetics of pets.

 

Following its debut yesterday evening (January 7), the animal charity's head of companion animals Dr Samantha Gaines warned that the programme shouldn't "perpetuate the idea that dogs are ours to objectify".

 

Dr Gaines suggested to Metro.co.uk that the series runs the risk of encouraging owners to treat their dogs as "toys or fashion accessories", although she did praise Pooch Perfect's inclusion of a veterinarian and animal welfare consultant during filming.
