Thai Bought Cell Phone, Thai Sim Card..

Featured Replies

Maybe a stupid question, but I don't know, so I ask. I bought a Nokia cell phone in Thailand along with a DTAC SIM card. Can I use it while in Malaysia or Singapore to make calls to Thailand?

You can use the cell phone, but for the sim card, I am not sure if you can use post paid using the roaming services, but I am sure that you cant use the prepaid packages outside the country. :o

Hmm.. That's a bummer if it's so. Thanks for the info.

As of 1.5 years ago, monthly AIS did not have a roaming option in Penang. You may have to buy a local refillable SIM card, if possible.

You should check with DTAC to see if they allow international roaming on your SIM. I think they do for post-paid accounts with registration and a good credit record, not sure about pre-paid accounts. 1-2Call does allow international roaming on pre-paid accounts but you do need to register first. Having said that, the tariffs are exorbitant so you are better off getting a pre-paid SIM in Malayasia, which is quite easy.

That's what I'll do. I called DTAC (probably what I should have done first) and they said prepaid cards from here will not work.

I use DiGi prepaid in Malaysia. Calls back to Thailand are cheap: RM 0.18/minute if you phone a landline; RM 0.43/minute if you phone a mobile. Billing is in half-minute increments. An international SMS costs RM 0.15 to send. DiGiStarter kits are currently RM 8.50 and come preloaded with RM 5.00 credit.
