T-shirt is OK, Shorts not OK.

And no tank tops. Years ago I remember visiting temples and you had to wear a wrap around your shorts to enter. I surely hope the Chinese men don't enter with their t-shirts pulled up over their bellies. I think the look is too sexy for temple. : )

Casual shorts yes, sports or spandex is not really appropriate, as for T-shirts go with sleeves even if short and a collar ... polo-shirts are better.

Its rather like a woman going into a western church wearing a bikini.

you obviously haven't been into Australian catholic churches at beach side suburbs. Women have been able to wear their bikinis into the church since the late 70's early 80's.

You might get away with a short sleve  T-shirt but some temples will not alow shorts.  Where the palace is next to reclining Budha you cannot wear shorts, must rent floppy pants or walk down the street and buy a pair of like those elephant pants to get in.

I'm not religious but I have been in churches wearing tee shirts and short pants but they were not holding services at the time I am not planning on making merit so I won't be participating in any kind of event. My question was so I wouldn't be disrespectful personally I don't care what people wear or don't wear. Also what I want to see is outside the actual temple

Short answer: No.

Long answer: It depends.

At the temples I attend locally in our Tambon its not uncommon to see Thai men and women show up in dress that a farang would be crucified on social media for wearing.  Including showing up in shorts and a T-shirt or gals in short-skirts.

Then, are you touring a temple or attending services?
If a tourist, especially a foreign tourist, you should be cut some slack.
If you're attending service you should know better.

I have been in 100's of temples in shorts.

The only place shorts appear to be an issue is the Grand Palace and they provide some pull-over pants.

Now before all the respectful gents pop off,

Monks photo'd doing the following things:

1. Smoking Cigarettes

2. Playing on IPADS

3. Driving a Car

4. Shopping for Electronics

5. Coffee in Starbucks

6. Eating Pizza at Pizza Company

7. Surfing the internet in a cafe

8. Handling cash and paying for their own purchases

The list goes on and on and on....
