Manager reported that many Thai people on online forums were not happy with the state of the roads and traffic in Koh Chang as they tried to get home on Sunday.

The media reported 2 kilometer tailbacks from the ferry terminals as 5,000 vehicles carrying 20,000 people headed home.

The exodus forced the ferry companies to put on extra sailings to cope with the crowds.

Operators said that the three day holiday weekend saw hotels and resorts almost all full.

Based on an expenditure of 2,000 to 3,000 baht per person Manager said that the weekend had put at least 90 million baht into the economy.

90,000,000 divided by 3000 is 30,000 people on Koh Chang...really!

Now the 20,000 people trying to get back, each spending 2000 is 40M...more like it.

it's more a habit than necessity to travel far away on long weekends.

do organise your work and holidays in such way, that you can travel sunday to friday. Those 5 days don't have to be often, but are relaxing and cheep, comparing to congested roads and full hotels.

it's plain risky to stay at full hotel

Sounds like those who were complaining were part of the problem.

If they wanted to be part of the solution, they could have stayed home.

It happened to us - even though I added a couple of days onto our holiday post official holiday ( the govt added a late one day hol' to the official one - seems to be a govt game to keep people on their toes )

Was there well before the first ferry - 1+ plus min, but still didn't make it. When we got on there was a massive queue.

When I go to Koh Chang now I always make sure there are no hols !!!

BTW - Colin(ZMF) if you're still there drop me a line ????

No pleasing some people is there !!! The place has (as far as I am aware) been empty for months, they get a few tourists and everyone complains because the only way on & off the island is busy, leave before the weekend finishes or stay an extra night, sorted ????

That would require planning! Not going to happen.

And domestic tourism is not injecting a dime into the economy, it's simply moving it around from other places where they may have spent it. What is needed is to allow an influx of tourists from abroad, but only if they are carrying a briefcase full of money ????

With a long weekend one would have thought a bit of forward planning would have increased the services at peak times.
