Claims of favoritism in vaccine rollout dismissed as a "misunderstanding"

A popular Facebook page that discusses medical issues published what they said was evidence that VIPs in the provinces were getting preferential treatment in being vaccinated ahead of medical personnel.

The post on "Infectious - ngai nit diaw" caused a storm of criticism or what PPTV36 called a major "drama". The post was soon removed.

The media announced that PM Prayuth Chan-ocha and infectious disease staff had denied the claims.

But in the body of their story they merely quoted Prayuth as saying that exactly who gets the vaccine first is up to each province and that more evidence was needed.

Also not going as far as a denial was Dr Opas Kankawinpong who claimed that the health authorities had reacted swiftly to the story.

He appeared at a hastily arranged press conference at 11 am.

Dr Opas mentioned a "breakdown" in the registration process" meaning that some staff were not on an original list.

Referring to Nakhon Ping hospital in Chiang Mai - where the allegations appear to be centered - he said that "frontline" staff in the media, police and military were also given jabs on Sunday in the first round of vaccinations.

Some "commissioned officers" were on the list.

It was not VIPs he maintained.

But he promised a committee would be set up to investigate.

Later Nakhon Ping director Worachet Techarak joined the fray saying that the post was a "misunderstanding".

He clarified that Chiang Mai had received doses for 1,750 people of whom 1,450 were frontline health workers.

Another 300 were also frontline people comprising public health volunteers, policemen, soldiers, department of public administration staff and some in the tourism industry.

He claimed there were no so called VIPs on the list just those who should get vaccinated.

Let the commissioned officers and VIPs be the guinea pigs. I don't care.

i guess the problem is that some of the little people here misunderstand how things actually work in thailand.

VIPs getting (fill in the blank) before the regular folks get it, if at all, is just how it goes here

Had I been back in the UK I would have been vaccinated in mid February, the paperwork was mailed to the house I use over there.

But I'm not in the UK, so no vaccine for me.

Even Blind Freddie knows how things work here. There won't be too many VIP's going for the Chinese Sinovac bootleg moonshine, they'll be waiting for the real deal!

1. Well, Dr. Opas has "promised a committee would be set up to investigate" - so let's wait and see what the committee finds ... (hahaha).

2. Seems like there's a clash between the definitions of "VIPs" (rather vague and general) and "commissioned officers" (rather specific).

3. Claiming it's a "misunderstanding" is common here - but so often: it's not clarified exactly what the actual misunderstanding is - it's just thrown up as a cover-all cure-all.

4. What a disgrace if it transpires there was monkey business so early in the vax roll-out ...

Right, and the other 300 were? Local politicians and puyai's, and senior police and military officers, with enough left over the cover the rich locals who can afford to make a suitable contribution to the governor's "Covid wellness fund", lol. It's great to see a kleptocracy working so effectively.

This is normal Thai behaviour, Surprised even made the news

And 6,391 new cases and 343 new deaths in the United Kingdom and 35 new cases in Thailand no new deaths today. So what is your problem? can't find a flight back?

"But he promised a committee would be set up to investigate."

ANOTHER committee!

They'll be setting up a committee to discuss what time the committee should convene the next committee meeting, AFTER they've set up a committee to decide who is going to sit on the committee!!!

No way how could such a thing happen?  This is Thailand!????

Sino for the pleasant and AstraZ for the brass!

I'm flabbergasted. My garst is totally flabbered.

No priority for 60 year olds plus. Khun Prayut is 66. Maybe that's why he's waiting? He wants to be last for the vaccine. Wanna bet!

Nobody died in Thailand today? Or did you mean no autopsies were conducted on the dead in Thailand today? If you live here you will know that autopsies or test are very rare. Simply burn the body.

A breakdown in the registrations process....

Is that similar to a wardrobe malfunction,?

Janet Jackson 2004  Superbowl show
