I'm planning well ahead here !  At the moment I want to make sure I'm not in-country for more than 180 days per calendar year so hence the need for thinking long in advance.

My current Non-O extension of stay expires 16th February 2022. Firstly I see here that it can be renewed up to 30 days before (would need to check for Chiang Rai). Assuming I did that, for example let's say on 25th Jan 2022, can I then get a re-entry permit and leave the country for example on 10th February 2022 for a couple of months?  I'm just slightly confused about any implications of what the re-entry permit is potentially tied to if anything (tied to the old extension of stay, or the new one, or not tied to either). Also any implications of leaving before the new extension starts ?

Obtain new extension.

Then obtain reentry permit. It will have untill date the same as your new extension

So it is irrelevant that I'd be leaving before the new extension kicks in ?

The re-entry permit will be stamped as valid until your current extension of stay at time of issue. I had an extension to 4th May 2021 and a re-entry permit also to that date. I renewed my extension last week and my stay was extended to 4th May 2022 (can extend 45 days in advance at Bangkok). I will be leaving Thailand in April but not returning before expiry of current re-entry permit on 4th May 2021. Therefore I will need to get another re-entry permit before departure.

Very useful. So get the new extension and after that, get the re-entry permit.

But do you have to be present in-country on the day the new extension kicks in ?   What you are planning to do is exactly the same as I am.
