AC starts "clicking sounds" after 5-6 hours

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm not very technical savvy so I'll appreciate some help here. My AC after being on 5-6 hours starts do some "clicking noises" and some nights it stops after a while, and some nights it continues until I wake up and turn it off. I only use AC in the night time making troubleshooting somewhat difficult (I just turn it off and get back to sleep with a manual fan).

I just checked into this condo (2 weeks ago) and I would like to have a small idea what the problem might be before I send for an engineer or text the agent.

Would you guys have any clue? ???? Thanks!

More details:
The AC seems to be working altough clicking/making distinct noise. It certainly works *now* if I choose to turn it on, it only happens after 4-6 hours.

sounds like it might be the motor that moves the vanes, actually, the vanes themselves rather than the motor, or something stuck in the vanes. have a look yourself and see if anything is catching, otherwise call the aircon man.  Have you tried switching off vane movement to see if it disappears?

The clicking could be a noisy  compressor relay  clicking on and off  not much can be done about that except changing the relay on the main pcb board.... or if set to some auto setting  might start the louvre door thingies swinging about /up and down that might cause a clicking noise, also sometimes the plastic casing  makes a noise  from the temperature changes  but can often be solved by loosening the retaining screws just enough to allow a small amount of movement.

I had similar and Pilotman has it right, it was the vanes themselves ! Kept them static and problem went, adjusted and fixed.

Excellent!

Thanks for the reply.

I'll manually try to fix it and if I can not I'll contact some Aircon Technician. Although on a slight different note, would you guys swallow the costs or start a convoy with the Agent for rent reduction of that amount? I would take the cost non-stop if this was on my 4-5 month, but I've only stayed here 2 weeks...I would appreciate some flavor on your reasoning here. Thanks!

First use your remote to stop the veins from swinging (set to a static position).  If that is the issue, a fix may or may not be practical.  For me, the left/right swing was clicking so I just set to a static position and can't be bothered to get it 'fixed'.  If a fix is what you need, why not have the landlord contact for that?  A rent reduction for that sounds a bit OTT.

When I had this problem it was caused by ice forming and being hit by a moving part, aggravated by high humidity. Turning the machine off long enough to get it to melt usually cured it temporarily.

It took certain combination of weather and having the AC on for long periods .

That means your refrigerant level is getting low.  You have a leak.

Had this on mine. A good clean stopped it. Condensate was falling onto drip tray and not draining away. The clicking sound was the water hitting the drip tray in greater quantities than normal as the coils were clogged . Your landlord didn't clean it before you moved in

My bedroom AC stopped cooling recently. Had agent call AC guy. Compressor start capacitor had died. Cost 900 baht. Agent said I had to pay so I dug contract out and pointed to where it was owners responsibility so they asked me to pay and reduce my online payment to owners bank by 900 baht the next month. No problems.

The stepper motor which drive the air vanes often only has plastic gears. I have had one in Australia lose tooth or two on a gear and just "clicks" in that spot. As others have suggested set vanes to stationary.
