Go back and listen to it again. He didn't promise that at all. He promised a review into fans influence in football in the future But that was secondary to his first and most important point that the govt will be pursuing all legal avenues bla bla bla to stop this Super League from happening. Deary me Champers. There are enough uncertainties flying around without you making stuff up. I'd expect more from the Pride of Pattaya.

I would wager the lawyers of this super league had pre-empted most if not all of the moves that the FA, UEFA, FIFA and various Governments would make. He never had Crickets version of Barca, RM, MU, MC, Liv etc etc behind him. Just booting out the English 6 from the PL would make the PL crumble around the world overnight. We'd be back to splitting a million quid of TV rights between, WBA, Leicester, Everton etc like in Scotland. Will Spain really kick out Barca and RM?

Excel is right though, there are plenty of parallels that can be drawn from that situation, including the potential that players would walk away from representing their countries. But the key takeaway from the Packer cricket comparison is why Packer started WSC, what his aims were, and what the outcome was. As we know, Packer was disgruntled that Channel Nine got refused the TV contract for Australian cricket. In the end, the Australian Cricket Board was forced into a position of accepting his (very good) offer for the rights, and WSC was then wound up. Why is this relevant? Because there is a very good chance the Super League clubs are doing this a bargaining chip with UEFA. They may have horribly miscalculated and it will backfire, but there is also a chance that a few months or couple of years down the line, the clubs will come back to the table with UEFA in a far stronger position and end up getting what they want (a larger piece of the pie).

Suspect the Italians clubs will be the next to pull out just leaving the Spaniards to go away and play with themselves or perhaps with the JP Morgan All-Stars.

But rather than strengthen the bigger clubs position in being able to prevent further expansion, it looks like their botched heist has weakened any say and strengthened UEFA. After all... UEFA can now point to the fan reaction to the Super League closed shop etc etc as support for giving more teams the chance to compete in the CL.

Unfortunately, many fans probably think "they won", when that is far from the truth. More the case of agreeing to get screwed by the lover you know than getting screwed by someone else. This was all about others people's money and their power games and they got rightfully kicked in the teeth for not getting buy-in (if that was even possible). Dream on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tier divisions....opium for the masses.

If the government sees a significant problem, why wouldn't they step in with legislation, an example being, no standing only seating in stadiums after Heysel and Hillsborough. The more 'bodies' (Government, FA, PL, EFL, UEFA, fan groups, etc) that help the better. Start with ticket prices, which are bloody outrageous, stupid tv times, cup games in London which the northerners struggle to home from, etc. Somebody - an independent body - needs to get out there and ask the fans at different levels of the game what are footballs problems as they view them and start from there. The majority of fans/paying customers can hold them to account by voting with their feet and wallets but they won't. Look at ManU where they've hated their owners for +15 years. Some of the wore the old green and yellow scarfs, some left and started FC Manchester, but the majority remained because it is their life, their hobby, their passion, etc. I was listening to a City podcast this morning and one guy says he won't renew his season ticket for the Etihad next season but will buy one at Oldham but will continue to support City and not Oldham - 'cutting off your nose to spite your face' sprung to mind - he's not willing to see how all of this plays out at City.
