I traveled up from Kalasin to Khonkaen for an annual health check up as the big 59 years of age looms in a couple of days. I also wanted a report to remove some of the "wait clauses"  in my health insurance policy with Pacific Health insurance, Thailand.

I actually rang the company and also asked about the additional 40,000 baht out patient coverage as I have an overseas trip upcoming in September, to enable me to get back into Thailand, and they want an additional 10,000 baht on top. This is a bit annoying, when I took an excess already of 40,000 baht on coverage for in patient and I would never claim as an out patient. I am on retirement extension Non Imm -O.

I chose Ratchaphreuk hospital after reading members comments on the Isaarn forum. A good hospital and very helpful with English widely spoken among the staff. They try to be a little lazy and prefer Thai, but when pushed, they are well versed in explaining medical terminology in English, something in which my Thai language skills fall short.

A good report from the medical and no abnormalities apart from a small gallstone reported, which the lady doctor said needed no attention. She also wants be to cut down on Thyroid medication, with a further appointment in two months. Some scar tissue on my lungs which were remnants of my smoking days, I quit sixteen years ago.

I stopped alcohol 7-8 months ago and I don't smoke and all tests were normal. No cholesterol or diabetes, which I had worried about, PSA test all within guidelines, nothing of concern. The fee was 14,500 baht for a VIP package. My birthday present to myself and some peace of mind. I just wish we can get the vaccine soon at private hospitals.

I stayed two nights at Nadee 10 resort and hotel. It says it is a four and a half star,( on some web booking agencies) I say it is a good three star.

We got a deal at 1,130 baht a night through Agoda including breakfast. It was not cheaper to book direct. I asked because I initially booked one night and we stayed two.

Nadee 10 hotel is a good, very clean hotel with coffee shop, small swimming pool, which is like half indoors, on the ground floor, but I didn't fancy going in with everybody walking past staring on their way to the bar area. The hotel has secure parking, great shower area in the room, and a big screen TV featuring only Thai channels.

That's good news on the health exam, well done, I think a lot of people do what you've done, approaching 60 so they get checked....it's good piece of mind. In the coming years you might decide to slim down the checks and just test the bits that are problematic in older people, you should be able to cut the price in half without any real loss of confidence that you're in good shape..
