PHUKET:-- Leading figures from Phuket’s tourism and other industries have made a united plea for the national government to allow private businesses and even local municipalities on the island to buy their own vaccine doses to ensure that Phuket will be allowed to re-open to receive international tourists under the ‘Phuket Sandbox’ model on July 1.

Under the Sandbox’ model, fully vaccinated tourists would be allowed to enter Phuket without observing any period of quarantine.

A critical requirement to the policy is that 70% of the island’s population must be vaccinated for COVID-19 before the national government will give its approval.

If the local businesses want to assist the government in sourcing the vaccine and will also subsidise it I can’t see how this is anything other than a Win-Win for the Island and the government - I’m surprised the government aren’t actively pushing this.

The government could easily give the go-ahead and see an earlier return to tourism on the island.

Imagine the amount of Tourists from within Thailand who would travel to Phuket for the vaccine itself !!!

The Sandbox model is also so perfectly ideal for so many returning families who may wish to visit their home countries after being away for a lengthy spell.

I hope Thai government has courage to stay the course and to ignore the for profit groups who want to sell vaccine. These  people have not made a compelling case. On the contrary they are motivated by self interest and the action will create more potential for counterfeit product and more inequity in health care system. The last  people who should  go near vaccine in thailand are private  for profit interests.

How are they smart?  Why? Because they want to make a profit and to control the distribution? Where do you think they will get vaccine? Please share. What vaccine do you expect them to buy? Please tell us when EU and USA lifted restriction on export of their products.  When did it happen? Please tell us how Thailand will push aside all the countries with  purchase orders ahead of Thailand? Thailand will have a chance to purchase surplus Astra Zeneca and Janssen vaccines  just like the rest of the world, once the USA and EU release their surplus.  The USA is already starting to lose vaccine as people do not show for 2nd appointment and the pressure is growing to release the Astra Zeneca vaccine in storage before it expires.   The USA last month traded some of the stock to Mexico and Canada that came from  suspect Emergent contractors for future quality stock out of Canada and Mexico orders. Is this what you want, for Thailand to take on questionable quality stock that is at expiry, because that is all that is available aside from unproven Russia and China product ?

I will tell you what is not smart- the people who keep pushing this idiotic proposal.  The reason governments around the world have taken charge of the purchase and distribution is to ensure that the vaccine gets to those who need it most, to control cost and to prevent and to minimize the potential for counterfeit fake vaccine.

Some farangs are in panic mode whinging about access to vaccine. Well, the vast majority of them are at low risk. If they are being prudent and following social distancing and hygiene they are less likely to get infection and to spread than the  workers who are in contact with people very day. It is the poor service workers and health care personnel who need the priority since the  low wage earners are the ones most likely to be infected and to spread to many people.  There will be access to the vaccine in Thailand in the coming months and it will be  Astra Zeneca and then Janssen and then in small quantities Pfizer and Novavax.  Thailand does not have the infrastructure to support large distribution of Pfizer or Moderna product. The country cannot even keep ice cream from melting in transit and some foreigners expect that Pfizer or Moderna can be  easily distributed.

Your livelyhood definitely does not depend on tourism. Mine and my friends' does, therefor, and for other reasons I do support the chance of private vaccination.

You are honest in this statement, which is something  most of the people pushing this have not been.

However, I again ask, if tomorrow it was agreed for profit system to distribute vaccine, where do you think they will get the vaccine? What vaccine do you think they will be able to obtain?  There is no Pfizer, Moderna, jansen or Astro Zeneca vaccine  available outside of the already agreed upon contracts. Everything that would be sold is in the future,  6 months.  There is no point  having people get hopes up for miracle access when the supply is not there.

Your post seems well said and thought through. I'm moved to thought at reading yours and others post's to think if there were a more altruistic approach worldwide to this virus specific influenza vaccines then we would see a far wider availability now and in the future supply chain. Perhaps we area point of opportunity to re-think and re-work the way vaccines are produced and distributed in our world?Yes, yes nay-sayers ... I know the world doesn't work this way and don't be naive Troppo. But, it seems existentially obvious, in 'our best interest' to cooperate without any sense of partisanship in vaccine development (and yes there has been some).

private -paid multi-vax initiative ( “it”)appears entirely sensible & positive

it would supplement & assist the public- free  govt. single-vax initiative

it is not necessary in some countries as public scheme = private scheme for efficiency ( UK / Israel)

it could be “taxed” by govt.

it would however be seen as “ competition” and be compared in efficiency & choice to, and expose, the great inefficiency & restrictions of the public vax program, (very slow, low- effective Sinovac only..)

all but the very poor can pay the asking price for the unlimited vax choice

however political expediency inevitably trumps all the positive elements combined, so not permitted.

with no proper reason given of course..... as there is none.......

notes

if “saving lives” actually matters consider banning all mopeds to save approx. 1500 lives monthly

vs monthly approx. av. 9 covid deaths  (order of magnitude estimates).

vast economic & social cost of covid-restricting entire healthy populations again perfectly indicates human talent for collective insanity & self- destruction, justified by modern politics and “leadership”.

see the miserable covid-tyrant socialists out in force on this topic.....wonder how they found Phuket ?
