The COVID-19 situation in Thailand is approaching a critical level, with daily new infection and fatality rates on the rise, said Dr. Prasit Wattanapha, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Mahidol University, as he urged cooperation from everyone by keeping their guard up and wearing face masks all the time, even at home.

 

In a three-minute video clip, released before the CCSA press conference today (Monday), Dr. Prasit said that the COVID-19 situation today is totally different from that a year ago, when the government eased the restrictions imposed during the initial outbreak.

 

Today, he said, infections are on the rise and the fatality rate, which was 0.12% of all infections, has increased to 0.36%.

Yes, Thailand is past the peak. What is happening now is that local clusters are being identified and eliminated.

With the fatality rate from crossing the street in front of Mahidol University likely higher than this, I'm surprised the good doctor gets out of bed in the morning to come to work. If this figure is correct, it's 1/5 of the two-percent fatality rate worldwide.

I think "scissors" is the recommended position...maintains two torsos length distance between people (heads at least).

I'd like to see evidence that this is under control before any peaks or bottoms are in. At the moment its a critical stage and judging by the new ICU facilities on a cardboard box, its not under control yet.

Thailand can get on top of Covid provided immediate lock down to restrict spread and other safety measures social distancing wearing masks etc every effort should be made to expedite vaccine roll out for entire country. Forget about Tourism International or Domestic until at least 70% vaccinated unfortunately this means not before 2022 earliest

After your post I had to wash my eyeballs and take an aspirin as it gave me an instant headache....

probably he meant overflowing of hospital beds, overstretch of medics.

But that is only in some places - bangkok and in the red zones.

Patients can be moved to the other provinces.

To free space they should now allow self-quarantine for asymptomatic.

It's no point keeping them, when there are symptomatic waiting at home for any treatment - already several of them died without any help

Yet there is a new danger out there, home deliverer   food ,which has increased  1000 fold from the virus. Young kids on scooters racing up and down the streets as fast as they can go to make a buck. I wonder how this is going to end.

Wear your face mask at all times......even while eating your dinner! Can't be too careful ????

I suspect that what we will see is that nationwide, the number of new infections has stabilized or will drop, but there will be clusters where the numbers are higher. This is similar to the last wave, where there was one big hotspot, but elsewhere the numbers were controlled pretty quickly.

I see your point but the last wave did not have clusters in every single province due to Songkran travel and it was also with the less contagious variant.

 

This is a new experience for Thailand in that the previous measures are not working as effectively this time round.

Take a look at Canada. The province of Alberta had the lowest restrictions in place out of all the provinces and now has the highest infection rate per 100,000 people out of Canada and the US. Yet there are still those who say these lock downs don't help. 

 

ICU space is at capacity and although they have not started their Triage assesment program yet, medical personnel are stating the next two weeks are critical in bringing the number of admitted into hospital down. Ontario is very close as well. By this, the medical teams determine who receives full treatment based on long term survival rate. Ontario is flying people from ICU units in hard hit areas to other regions of the province. Many healthcare workers are burnt out. I predict that after we get a grip on this thing there will be a massive reduction in healthcare workers as many will go on long term sick leave, leave the profession, or just unable to work. My niece has been working in an ER unit in British Columbia pretty much non stop for the past 15 months. She has stopped answering her phone and just sleeps on her one day off(every 18 days). 

 

Thailand began this whole mess with strict measures and was doing a good job. The economy suffered, people (mostly those entrusted with running the country) started seeing less money, and now it appears that imposing those strict measures again is not possible. Why? I believe the people in charge do not want to pay out any more money to the people. Or there is no money left.

 

I truly hope the worst is past but seeing places like Canada and India struggling I am not so sure.

 

Talking with family and friends in Calgary it is a bit frightening to hear that it is now rare for people not to personally know of, or experienced themselves, someone who has covid19. 

6 months ago people only heard about cases via news reports.

Not sure what your problem is the food delivery is great. Never had a problem with them. Yes they take up roomon the road but that is about it. Quite happy with their services. I wonder why all the old farts are moaning about it.

 

It helps against covid too no longer having to wait in line yourself.

I think wearing masks in the home is a bit over the top

They should be concentrating on getting everyone vaccinated 

All we seem to be reading is priority given to the Tourist areas of Thailand

They seem to get  first priority over anywhere else  money talks

The Thai people are probably urging cooperation from the "leadership" [pains me to use that terminology] by getting vaccines with higher efficacy in the arms of those that want/need them and getting the country open, NOT closing and doing nothing while watching the economy deteriorate and people struggling.  HELP them, don't make it worse for them.

The drivers around my area are crazy. Weaving in and out of traffic, running red lights, cutting across lanes of traffic. 

I like the service but i am concerned about the road safety aspect of it.

'Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who chaired the CCSA meeting, ordered vaccinations in Khlong Toey to be sped up.'

 

Every time a vaccination is ordered to be 'sped up', this has to be at the expense of others who are in the long queue for it.

This has been quoted a few times now in different situations.

Yes, as soon as i see someone walking towards me, i automatically jump  into a full boxing stance with a high guard.

That assumes they have the logisitic and transportation capability to move sick / critical patients from one hospital to another safely and without creating contamination risks.. Which given they shut down entire hospitals because someone comes into it with COVID implies they are not confident in those abilities.
