Thailand plans to waive its mandatory quarantine for vaccinated visitors to its capital Bangkok and top tourist destinations from October, an official said on Friday, in a bid to revive a key industry battered by coronavirus travel curbs.

This would be good news.  I wonder when the COVID19 insurance requirement will be waived for vaccinated new arrivals.

To put that in perspective, New York which has a similar population, a little under at about 8.5 million is showing a 2.41% positive rate, about 2,500 new cases per day at around 100,000 tests.

Mass testing really does work.

https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data.page

If you look at the graph, you see that NY has positive rates ranging from 0% to 5.5% just like Bangkok.

Diseases like covid do not arise uniformly in the population, they spread and form clusters.  Positive rate of a cluster is not the same as a positive rate for all of Bangkok or Thailand.

Other than that, your comparison of Bangkok and NY is spot on. Hopefully that will wake up some.

Keep is mind, the outreach testing in BKK isnt the ONLY testing they're doing. It's special outreach testing. All the hospitals and clinics and such are still doing the regular patient based testing as they've been doing all along. So you'd need to add those numbers to the outreach testing numbers for BKK to get an apples to apples comparison...  (get that? or maybe apples to mangos?  ????

Just quoting a Senator there Matt Hoylman

"NYC’s COVID-19 positivity rate has dropped to 2.41%, the lowest in six months."

https://twitter.com/bradhoylman/status/1390694890649100288

Daily new cases is around 2,500

I do realize that PUI testing in Bangkok is separate. My point was despite a 2.4% positive rate they still mass test in high numbers to get a true picture of the situation.

Seven day median average is 2.4% but I get your other points and agree.

Outreach and random testing possibly?, If so they will possibly find more and more positive cases.  If this was a follow-up for track and tracing a case that walked into the hospital it shows there are all sorts of infected areas out there.  Time for Thailand to get ahead of the cases that are popping up......

It wouldn't be soda in that can or bottle, just a special population control beverage.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTTC) said consumer confidence hit a record low in April, dropping to 46.0 from 48.5 in March, dented by a new wave of COVID-19 infections.

UTTC president Thanavath Phonvichai said consumers feel that the economy has not recovered much and, lacking catalysts and consumer confidence, will remain on a downward trend with no signs of recovery until new infections decrease and more vaccinations are administered.

About a week ago, the authorities said that the 3rd wave has peaked. A dubious claim at the time, and I think we can now safely say that they had no clue.

From one day of rising cases?

Prachuap Khiri Khan had 27 new cases, and Chanthaburi had 25...

Let's see what today brings...given their respective outbreaks in the news overnight.

the only reason Thailands numbers were so low at that time was down to pure chance.

Rubbish.

They locked down hard, had curfews, near universal mask wearing, road side and shop temperature testing, etc etc.

They have been caught out badly by the UK strain which is making up 98% of cases in Thailand, (and also the majority of USA, northern India etc cases)

What difference does it make which strain it is?

do you even know how this latest outbreak started? Bet you dont.

Three national footballers, five staff test positive for Covid at training camp

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) on Saturday suspended training of the national football team after three players and five staffers tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday. The eight were found to be infected during training at a football camp. One of the players was a female.

According to doctors, the infection could have happened before or after their last Covid-19 test on April 30, and despite all the players and staff receiving the first dose of vaccine.

The FAT said that the timeline and information on the infected people had been given to the Ministry of Public Health. Other players and staff have been told to quarantine.

Of course it makes a difference. I guess your from the UK and take it personally. Its just a name UK strain does not mean it comes directly from the UK. They think it came over the land borders from an other country.

It matters a lot as that strain is far more contagious.

Thailand doubles its total vaccines target....

"Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has aimed to procure up to 200 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to prepare for unforeseeable emergencies as the pandemic continues to rage unabated in several countries.

He said the first priority will be to increase vaccine doses to 150 million doses or more and to prepare for any risk related to those vaccines, adding that the government had set a target of buying 100 million doses to inoculate 50 million Thais and thus create herd immunity.

The prime minister pointed out that Thailand had an adult population of about 60 million, and the country need 150-200 million doses of vaccine for future phases, as well as to consider the shelf life of vaccines and next year's situation."

Having targets is great...  actually getting the vaccine doses in hand/arm would be a whole lot better...  But it looks like they're finally getting the message.

Lot of hot air coming from the PM. Its a lot of vaccines but no deals have been made nor are they effectively vaccinating now on the levels they want. They AIM but never put in real figures. Always trying to look good while having messed up.

Vaccines should have been ordered long ago but no Thailand wanted certain people to reap the benefits. Now the whole populations suffers. I bet going partly for Shinovac that is not so effective has nothing to do with CP being part of Shinovac.

Thailand vaccines update through yesterday: 1.26 million first doses given, and 467,785 second doses given cumulatively, meaning still less than 1 percent of the almost 70 million population has been fully vaccinated since vaccinations began February 28.

Do you think they are still tracking and tracing "all" positive cases and placing all close contacts into self isolation?Because trying to do that many each day has got to be pretty tricky.

I agree. Now they are just going house to house since it appears many are infected in those areas.

Agree.

When Melbourne, Au reached ~ 1000 cases per day they went into HARD lockdown that lasted 112 days. Currently that state has zero daily positive from testing. Few days ago another state WA had ~ 2 or 3 test positive and went into 3 day lockdown. Sydney recently had couple of + tests and other states of Oz banned entries from some areas.

Bangkok is not in lockdown. Far from it.

Granted different countries so comparison is over simplifying the issue.

You can't compare Victoria with Thailand. At the moment all the neighbouring countries have plenty of covid cases, and the borders are quite porous. If they do a full lockdown and bring the cases back to zero, it would be a matter of time to get some covid from the neighbours again.

This MoPH chart is showing the total number of adverse vaccine reactions Thailand has recorded/recognized since beginning COVID vaccinations Feb. 27 through May 7:  13 out of 1.73 million doses given, and no deaths deemed related to vaccine use.

For Thais craving international travel while also wanting an anti-COVID-19 jab, a vaccination tour could be the answer. At least four Thai travel agencies are now arranging overseas trips featuring the much sought-after vaccine.

As noted above, keep in mind that the likely reason for at least part of the upswing in the case count today is that the government this week began a more aggressive campaign of outreach testing to find new cases in Bangkok, something they had only been doing on a much more limited basis before.

When you go looking more for COVID cases, you're likely to find more COVID cases. That's why the Ministry of Public Health earlier this week projected that the government likely will need to bring online an additional 1,300+ new field hospital beds each and every week for the near future, to accommodate all those new patients that will be required to quarantine under the government's policy to isolate everyone testing positive for COVID.

The testing data chart for Thailand below is only updated through April 24, and doesn't yet reflect the increased testing begun in the past week in Bangkok cluster outbreak areas such as Khlong Toei, Pathumwan, Bang Kae and others.

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/thailand?country=~THA#what-is-the-daily-number-of-confirmed-cases

It's tempting to think that as current cases in Thailand are not much higher than somewhere like the United Kingdom, and in the United Kingdom they're saying their cases are very low, that means Thailand is also very low. But in reality the United Kingdom is testing more than 10 times as many people, who knows what the true number of cases is in Thailand.
