Thailand orders an additional 50 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the procurement of 50 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from various sources, on top of the 100 million doses procured for this year, to make sure that everyone in the country is inoculated and that there are reserves left over for future use.

Due to the ever changing situation, he said that Thailand’s vaccine acquisition program must not rely on the assumption that herd immunity will be developed if 50 million people in Thailand are inoculated, while pointing out that it remains unclear when or whether herd immunity will actually be developed against a virus which keeps mutating.

The prime minister added that there remain several unanswered questions about the efficacy of vaccines whether two doses are enough to develop immunity.

    I have just ordered a rocket ship!   Doesn't mean it's coming. ????

  • There is no way to override it as long as the Minister stays in this  post.  Too much of what needs to happen has to be done by MoPH departments (FDA etc) and staff under the authority of the MoPH. Th

He's just woke up to the reality of the situation, better late than never, it does help that Anutin has been sidelined otherwise we may still be back to their original plan.

What did he order?

When will it be delivered?

Kind of basic stuff for a "news" article. Otherwise it's just propoganda.

He said he has set a target that, by the end of July, half of Thailand’s population will have received their first dose.

So that's what, ~ 20-ish million doses (assumes children are not getting vaccinated now)? In 11 weeks?

July? 2021?

Are they planning on spraying the population from airplanes?

I'm all for setting goals. But this is preposterous.

Thailand raises vaccine supply target to 150m doses

d509198e82e14a67888abd8e910f2a64_small.jpeg

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has again raised its supply target for COVID-19 vaccine, from 100 million to 150 million doses, to ensure everyone in the country is able to have access to the vaccine, while making sure there is still enough for booster shots addressing certain variants.

The Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has revealed on his Facebook post the government’s new plan for the country’s inoculation program, with the vaccine supply target now raised to 150 million doses, to cover the entire 60 million adult population in Thailand with shots to spare.

This new vaccine target will ensure everyone in the country has access to the jabs, beyond the number of people required to achieve herd immunity.

On his post, the Prime Minister said there are now uncertainties as to how long the immunity created by mass vaccinations would last; whether a booster shot will be needed; whether heard immunity can actually be achieved, as well as concerns about delays in vaccine delivery from manufacturers, all of which poses the need for extra vaccine procurement.

Thailand initially ordered around 63 million doses of vaccine to vaccinate some 31.5 people by the end of this year. The plan has since been changed to 100 million doses to cover 50 million people by the end of this year, a newly adjusted target to achieve herd immunity.

Thailand’s inoculation program is to rely heavily on a limited supply of Sinovac vaccine from China, while the vaccination drive for the general public will start in June with a mass supply of AstraZeneca vaccine, manufactured locally by Siam Bioscience.

The Prime Minister said he has urged all related agencies to accelerate vaccine deals and negotiations. Currently, the Thai government is in talks with seven manufacturers, including Pfizer which can tentatively supply 10-20 million doses to Thailand in Q3-4 this year. The government is also planning to negotiate vaccine deals with more manufacturers as well.

The government has also encouraged private hospitals to purchase vaccines from Moderna via the Government Pharmaceutical Organization, however these jabs will be provided by private hospitals at a charge, to complement the government’s inoculation program.

The government has now adjusted its guidelines for the vaccination drive by focusing on providing the first shot of vaccines to as many people as possible. The prevailing sentiment in the medical community is that a single shot of vaccine can immediately help reduce the transmission and the severity of the disease.

With this new approach, the government is now optimistic half the adult population in Thailand will get their first jabs by late-July.

is it a bootleg from some his mafia friends, who usually operate drugs? that would require some secrecy and clearly this statement lacks in any details.

Next September, Covid will be history. This September, most will have got the vaccine.

You mean in the the U.S., right?

If you are inferring that Thailand will vaccinate "most" by 30 Sep 2021, then maybe you should lay off the regime's Kool-Aid for a few weeks.

Why just Moderna?  Why not include J&J, Pfizer etc?

Hopefully, it will come in due course.

Finally a chance to grease some palms has arisen, hallelujah !

Think I’m being facetious ? I know for a fact that Government officials were demanding kick-backs from hotels to be registered on the ‘prestigious’ approved ASQ list. Moderna will be selling at market price with no funny business, so there is only one way to make a little money out of this.

There is no depth they will not stoop.

I cannot understand this forecast, even though I would of course wish it to be so.

However, it is more in line with the rather vague to insubstantial announcements of the government, but even there I have not heard any such optimistic tones so far, with the exception of TAT of course.????

So what reliable facts do you refer to in your statement?

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Only thing you can believe for a second vaccine buy is what he is holding so he can appease CP and the big Chinese masters.

All jokes aside, I have never liked this man or his cabinet, and I still don't, but we have to give him credit for side lining that "dirty" Anutin who failed everyone.

Since taking hold of the Raines, we are moving forward at a much much faster pace than that "dirty" Anutin who was absolutely useless in his position as Health Minister.

I believe Prayut will deliver on doing his his best to vaccinate 50 million people by the end of the year, i.e. if they are willing to take the medicine.

As for Covid getting out of control and the many deaths since beginning of April, well he is responsible for that, isn't he.

Will someone please explain to this dickwad that vaccines Do not make you immune they lessen the severity of the symptoms should you be unfortunate enough to catch it. DOH!!

It is not a good situation to have the PM/head of CCSA in conflict with the Minister of Health.  All sorts of ways MoPH can drag its heels causing things not to go as publicly promised.

Prayut cannot implement much of anything without the full and speedy cooperation of the MoPH.

IMO the only thing worse than having these 2 in their respective positions is having them in their positions and at loggerheads with each other.

I guess he was not in a hurry to act as the Czar .... he was named 2 weeks ago with the goal of expediting corona virus related issues and the best he can do is to tell us he order an additional 50 million vaccines, from who or where, China or  Siam Bioscience, which one gives the thicker envelope

I would not assume orders have actually been placed. He seems to have a tendency to announce as already done, anything he has given an order to do. A common military mentality but not realistic in a government bureacracy..

Many of these things take time and involve complex steps. And cooperation from diverse government entities, some of which may be less than fully  motivated to cooperate.

The new normal will be forever abnormal.  If you didn't see it last March 20201, now it's out in plain view.
Here's the common theme being promoted internationally: "...it remains unclear when or whether herd immunity will actually be developed against a virus which keeps mutating."

The Covid <whatever> will not end and will be replaced with governments and media promoting the existential threat of Covid variants and the need for unending Covid $hots - forever.  Like the seasonal Flu which we have been told has disappeared, Covid will be the center-piece of the vaccine manufacturer's revenue streams until a new "novel" virus happens along to take it's place2. Masks and limits on gatherings and travel will be the new normal. Occasionally relaxed, often reimplemented (by emergency decree if not cannonized into law) with the tacit approval of a global populace scared out of their wits by media driven fear of pathogens. Future global governance will be based on the will of a majority affected by Mysophobia.
Even Huxley and Orwell missed this variation of the dystopian theme.

I am not an expert. Just my  opinion based on what I hear. We are starting next month with phase 2, then phase 3 in a a couple or 3 months.

No disrespect, but I am truly amazed that you actually believe that. The real control is not Anutin and never has been as he is just a mouth piece pawn in place for the collective of Junta called the council. Now that SB with the the AZ is almost open and set to let the games begin next month, we and the Thai will probably only after a few more to several months see any doors opened for other vaccines other than the Sinovac or AZ. One mission one plan and the rest is lip service that is wreaking with deception. I may be wrong, but their actions and non actions speak volumes for their real intent.

A Happy New Year gift for many from Prayut me thinks.

It's just the daily hopium.

It has now been announced all neccesary vaccines have been 'ordered'. We therefore need no more news stories about vaccines being ordered.

  • Popular Post

Another misleading headline.  Thailand has NOT ordered another 50 million doses.  Don't we wish!  Instead, the PM has decided Thailand needs to 'procure' 50 million more doses.  Not the same thing at all.  Of course, no idea where those 50 million doses might come from since the Thai approval process is slow as molasses and Thailand is at the back of the line.
