Police in Chiang Mai have arrested a British after he allegedly threatened a monk with a machete.

 

Police said that the man went to Wat Eranthawan located in south Chiang Mai on Sunday armed with machete and confronted the monk, who managed to escape and call the police. 

 

CCTV footage appeared to show the man at the temple brandishing the machete.

 

On Monday, officers from Hang Dong police station arrested the 50 year old British man at a house in Nam Phrae district following a four hour stand-off.

 

Police said they found a small quantity of cannabis inside the man’s Toyota car. 

 

He was also found to be on overstay.

 

The man has been charged with drug possession, trespassing, criminal nuisance and overstaying his visa.

 

His motivation for confronting the monk was not known.

What an idiot. Chiang Mai prison is the last place you would want to be right now.

In the video he talks about being tired of corruption in the village, just wants to be left alone   wanted to kill himself !!  maybe something has pushed him too far ?

Again in the video  it appears the villagers staked out his house waiting for him to  come out  but at about midnight someone else turned up at the house in another vehicle and the British man was able to "escape"   later the newsreader says he was captured whist trying to leave the province.

All a bit odd.  He seems to live in a nice house; unusual at least. Has a nice car. No real need to have been on overstay.

Not sure we'll ever know the full story here.

he didn't have to pre-meditate; he just could have meditated at the temple.

it is possible he embraces a religion that includes a machete, and was simply on his way to both meditate and cut down some corn stalks.  

 

and maybe they were breaking his windows because they thought his house was on fire or snakes were on the glass..

 

anything is possible......this guy has a story, that is for sure.

   Looks like he was set up pretty well.

   A lone nutcase?

   No romance scams involved?

Looks and sounds a little bit crazy.  Probably has some mental issues.  Maybe that contributed to his visa/extension of stay expiring and everything kind of snowballed.

 

I hope he's able to get some help.

His been watching the Thais to much they love their machete's as weapons !

This is why 90 day reporting is important.   Might be a good idea to make it 89 days now.

Well, apart from the overstay bit he does seem to have been acting pretty normally for daily life in Thailand

Gets 8 minutes exposure on the tv guess they are so fascinated with us. A thai in mine county walking around with a machete would never even make it on the tv news. Nobody Cares.
