Yup, it's a pandemic.  Quite why anyone thought it wouldn't eventually affect Thailand, I have no idea.  The numbers are still relatively low, and in my opinion, don't justify the panic being expresse

  • Yep. I now personally know 3 Thais who have people in their condo or Moo Bahn infected. A factory 1km from my office had 160 cases. It's everywhere.   The daily numbers are completely useles

Most countries vaccination plans disagree with you. The WHO vaccination plan guidance also disagrees with you.

Its all down to prioritizing vaccines when they are in short supply and protecting those who are old and vulnerable first along with the health workers, after that the WHO advises taxi drivers(transportation workers) only when there is a 21-50% vaccine availability:

Stage 3 ( 21-50% vaccine availability) covered low to moderate risk health workers, vaccine producers and high risk lab staff, other essential workers outside health and education sectors such as police officers, municipal services, child-care providers, agriculture and food workers, and for example miners and food processors, transportation workers, government workers essential to critical functioning of the state not covered by other categories.

Yes, I think you are right.

Because the mortality rate of Covid is quite low among the general population, most countries have firstly focused on high risk groups for vaccination. Vaxxing a 30 year old cab driver might slow the disease more because he is in contact with a lot of people, but vaxxing an old or already sick person might save a life. In essence, saving lives was the priority.

initially, it seemed Thailand was going that route. Health workers because they mix with Covid infected people and are needed to help the sick, old and people with existing medical conditions because they are more likely to die.

but recently, from what I read, Thailand is increasingly vaxxing those groups that it is felt contribute economically. So tourist workers in Phuket, foreigners in Phuket who work for a Thai company, construction workers needed to finish construction projects, now Pattaya wants tourists workers vaxxed.

another issue is the goal of getting a 70% vax rate. It’s a good target to have. But it seems that it has become THE target, and so just vax any and all who register.

I think the initial focus on vulnerable groups has fallen by the wayside somewhat and now it’s a kind of free for all.

Chonburi Public Health Office has just just announced that they have 34 new cases. The total so far is now 4,303. Most new cases are in Chonburi City (13) #COVID19 #Thailand

I mean I'm sure your posts are to promote an anti-lockdown agenda rather than express genuine concern for the elderly but if you really can't see why vaccination of taxi drivers is a good thing then let me explain....

The elderly are vulnerable if exposed to the virus. They can safe guard against this by staying at home and limiting exposure to other people as much as possible.

While Mr Elder is staying at home, taking care not to interact with others, Mr Taxi driver is in contact with tens of people every day. Should he become infected with Covid, while he will most likely survive (and may not even show any symptoms), he has the possibility to spread the infection to all of his passengers. Who can then of course spread it to anybody they come into contact with.

When there's a limited supply of vaccines, then the priority needs to be vaccinating those who come into regular contact with lots of people (potential super spreaders), whilst ensuring that the vulnerable keep out of harms way.

Actually I can see that vaccinating taxi drivers after vaccinating the vulnerable groups is a good idea as the world has clearly shown it's not able to protect the vulnerable by keeping them out of harms way whilst vaccinating the less vulnerable first. Can you suggest any other transparent country doing it the way you suggest is best?

And in the UK the feeling is that it's almost over, with ALL lockdown restrictions to end next month.  A shame that Thailand didn't (doesn't) have a similar vaccine program.
