More than 100 cases of the new strain have been identified across the country.

 

Known as VUI-21MAY-02 (C.36.3), the variant was first detected in Thailand in people who had travelled from Egypt, Public Health England confirmed.

 

It was designated as a variant under investigation on May 24 on the basis of the mutation profile and increased importation from a widening international area.

 

There is currently no evidence that this variant causes more severe disease or renders the vaccines any less effective.

or variant of Covid they have named after themselves as they were the first to identify this. The Name they have given it isn't even along the same variant composition names in use....lol So yes they have to be special well maybe...

The new variant is known as C.36.3 and was first detected in Thailand, according to Public Health England.

Officials say cases there were found in people who had originally travelled from Egypt.

There have been 109 cases of the new Thai strain reported in the UK, data published today shows.

Well congratulation Thailand you have another hub!! The Thai Variant This will not go down well as the boot is now on the other foot.

It is probably a variant that have adapted to the alcohol ban and early closure at night,  it stand no chance against the British pub culture.

So isn't it the Egyptian variant rather than the Thai variant? Or maybe it's something to do with Egyptian getting into Thai and doing weird things. Surely anyone coming from Thailand to UK was PCR tested before departure and on day 2 and day 8. I certainly was tested 3 times and home quarantined for 10 days so how has this got into the community? Thais not behaving in the same way as Indians and spreading the variant strain?  Never!

The UK has a very large volume of incoming travellers. Every day there are some 100 arrests for forged negative tests, mostly from travellers from poor countries, like egipt (each test costs around $130, so not cheap). Probably many times more get through into country

Governments and Government scientists just make it up as they go along, pointing fingers at who ever points fingers at them. In my humble opinion only one person has got this right over the past 18 months or so, Donald Trump. Love him or hate him but COVID-19 is THE CHINA VIRUS that over time has mutated as viruses do. Stop pointing fingers and get on with vaccinating people who wish to be vaccinated. Personally I believe vaccines are the only sensible way forward......

Yes, developed in Egypt, discovered in Thailand. Just have to read the article properly.

So it's either the "C.36.1 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus", or it's the "Thai strain of the China Virus".

Arrived in the UK on Wednesday via Frankfurt. Loads of non-EU passengers on the plane and the queues at Heathrow for them will have given them a lot of waiting time. For the EU queue, 4 minutes wait and through. Pity that the last flight was over an hour delayed due to untypical German inefficiency checking all the PAssenger locatorforms, plus two people did not board so all luggage bins were taken out of the hold to get out their three pieces of luggage. It was raining so hard in Frankfurt that one of the canvas items would have been soaked through.

Some people in the UK are finding the Thai variant too spicy.

Amazing, now the Egyptian variant has become a Thai variant in British media. I read the other day that the Indian government is complaining about using the name "Indian variant" instead of B.1.617.2; perhaps the Thai variant should just be addressed as the easy to remember name "VUI-21MAY-02 (C.36.3)", then nobody need to discuss if it's an Egyptian or a Thai variant...????
