In a startling U-turn the Thai cabinet yesterday decided to cancel Tuesday July 27th as a nationwide public holiday. 

 

This will result in many people having to seek travel and hotel refunds. 

 

The original plan was to have a five day holiday from 24th to 28th July inclusive encompassing Buddhist holidays, a replacement day and HM King's birthday on July 28th.

 

So Tuesday 27th was added to make it a long Saturday through Wednesday break to encourage travel and stimulate the economy.

 

Yesterday government deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said that the Covid-19 situation has changed all that.

 

Now the government doesn't want people to travel so they have cancelled the holiday. 

 

She said that the government is urging those in the state and private sector to give refunds for travel and hotel packages that would need to be cancelled. They asked for cooperation.

 

Thaivisa notes that this will come as a major blow to the tourism industry that was banking on revenue from the long holiday.

 

In recent days tourism officials in Trat, for example, said they were banking on big money from the five day break in Koh Chang. 

 

The announcement also comes after the government faced huge criticism for the badly bungled late hour announcement of the closure of construction sites in Bangkok at the weekend.

 

Thousands of workers got wind of the impending closure of the sites and took off to the countryside amid fears that would only exacerbate the spread of the virus. 

 

Noticeably yesterday Ratchada was left to fend for herself with no major figure in the government facing the press over this U-turn, as reported by Daily News yesterday.

If I worked in a construction site I would have done a runner also.

At this point, anyone who makes plans or spends money based on what the government tells them they are going to do must know they are taking a big risk.

 

I don't trust them to keep their word any more than I'd trust a bi-polar teenage meth addict that was high on LSD and had LIAR tattooed on their forehead.

I wonder how many folk either work for themselves or currently stood down from work and as a result can choose not work Tues 27.

Will n ot work.. people will take an extra day off to go  on holiday. If you want it works cancel 26th too. It is already stupid to have an extra day off if there s a holiday in the weekend 

So Monday and Wednesday remain holidays.

 

And people who work can take Tuesday as a personal holiday?

 

And can anyone travel? For the 3-day weekend?

 

All very confusing.

 

Honestly, this regime could throw a dart and hit themselves in the back of the head.

Yeah ive got the 29th and 30th already approval annual leave, the 26th will be my travel day up country... I  dont want it cancelled !!

Woe are the people of Thailand. Power to the youth. May they prevail over the dinosaurs, and may the Jurassic crew meet a very unpleasant and humiliating end of their careers. One they richly deserve.

Yet the sandbox and tourists from abroad are OK?  Do we live in a nuthouse here or what?

I would imagine the only people taking advantage are the elite of Bangkok who have most probably have made millions from this pandemic not your everyday worker who are in debt up to there eyeballs

How many U-turns does this government make first they said they’re going to open up vaccine places to walk and it’s in Chiang Mai then the next day they did a U-turn and said no they were afraid they wouldn’t be able to control all the people amazing Thailand TIT
