BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Army has elevated its field hospital within the 11th Army Circle to take in both yellow and red level COVID-19 patients, to aid Bangkok, which is experiencing a shortage of beds for Covid-19 sufferers.

The field hospital has been provided with medical support from Thonburi Hospital both in terms of equipment and personnel. So far, it has added 200 beds for yellow patients and 55 for red patients. Director of the Medical Office of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Dr. Suksan Kittisupakorn said today that coordination is taking place with the Ministry of Public Health, to fill the beds and assess the true capability of the facilities.

Bangkok is planning to expand its current count of 5,200 beds to 8,146. Of the total, 7,615 will be for green level patients, 420 will be yellow and 111 will be red. Coordination is also taking place with hospitels to further extend availability of beds.

At the same time, the Ministry of Public Health and its Department of Medicine have outlined procedures for Home Isolation. Eligible patients must be green level, showing few or no symptoms, and must have volunteered to home isolate. They must maintain a communication channel with their attending hospital and notify the facility of any changes in their condition. Rajvithi and Nopparat Rajathanee hospitals have begun piloting the approach in Bangkok.

National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Gen Nattaphol Nakphanich, as director of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration’s (CCSA) operational center, says home isolation will help authorities handle the number of COVID-19 infections, especially as Delta and Beta strain infections rise. He confirmed nonetheless, that vaccinations must be administered as soon as possible, indicating 10 million doses of vaccine are to be delivered in July. He urged state, private sector and civilian members to work together to maintain preventative measures in the meantime.

On Move Forward Party Leader Pita Limjaroenrat’s call for a disbanding of the CCSA due to its alleged failure to manage COVID-19, Gen Nattaphol didn’t comment directly but stated he still has confidence in the center’s ability.
