Looks like he was a race driver in his second job. Gunning the engine does not necessarily mean this, accelerating flat out in gear reaching max revs without changing up a gear is also applied as gunning it.. He pulled out in front of his mate and IMO was trying to race/impress/show off his car to his work mate. Failed. but succeeded in a Darwin award.
