Rapid vaccination rates ‘A cause for celebration’ and may indicate Cambodia will reopen ahead of neighbouring countries.

Cambodia’s aggressive vaccination record is showing results that indicate it is becoming increasingly likely the Kingdom will reopen ahead of neighbouring countries. The news follows analysis by Mekong Strategic Partners (MSP).

“I think it’s fair to say that Cambodia has exceeded everyone’s expectations. The government has been criticised in part for what they’ve got wrong or what they’ve done wrong, but you really need to give them full marks for how they’ve managed the vaccine programme,” MSP Managing Director Stephen Higgins told Khmer Times.

MSP analysed data from The Financial Times Vaccine Tracker, Executive One Consulting (Xl), Thompson Reuters, The Straits Times, the World Bank and Our World in Data. David Benaim, founder of X1 forecast 70 percent of the Cambodian population, including children, will be fully vaccinated by Sept 21. A total of 80 percent of the adult population is expected to be fully vaccinated by Aug 31. The Philippines is anticipated to follow and inoculate the same percentage of its population by March 22 next year.

I am sure 100% that Cambodia will reopen but insist on double vaxxed people and a Pre Covid test possibly with another test on Day 2, plus insist on travel insurance and that's it, if they are smart and want tourists revenue back quickly.

They have been ahead of the game throughout. If their population is vaccinated and they are opening it to vaccinated tourists, they can keep a lid on virus spreading.

They have had the advantage of extra vaccines because of its global rankings in poverty, and a far smaller population to vaccinate, but any good news, I'll take it.

Fans of Cambodia, in particularly, Siem Reap are not missing much as the whole city is a building site with works scheduled to finish in November. That would be in time for Q4.

Comments like this are perplexing to me. Do you not envision any future where countries recover from this? Do you want to see Cambodia, Thailand and all countries permanently financially crippled? The whole idea behind the vaccines is that with them, humanity will reach a point eventually where normal activities can resume without the threat of everyone getting sick or dying.

Every human being is a "possible carrier." The idea is to get to where it doesn't matter a lot that people are "carrying." Even vaccinated people can and do carry the virus. If Cambodia elects to only let vaccinated tourists in, that's their call.

80 percent vaccination, and then what?

The only future with something resembling previous international travel for the current super strict countries that can change their messaging and perception from "zero covid" that at all costs to  managing it.  On Australia ABC past two mornings, they too are pushing 80 percent vaccination, but politicians not  making anything more than vague promises of how harsh lock downs might loosen.

PM Scott Morris sounds so 8 months ago. Yes, of course vaccinate, But most countries and regions like Israel and Guam that achieved high vaccination rates, then opened  are now experiencing surges. Delta has changed everything. Lock downs don't work long term and how long do they expect to continue, and border restrictions? We cant make the cure (permanent economic disaster and disruption to normal life) worse than the disease

New strategies are needed. The virus is never going away we have to learn to live with it.
