Big Joke vs Big Too: PM wins court battle against former top policeman over transfer from Immigration

It has been a very public disagreement in Thailand - the spat between the former head of the Immigration Bureau Lt-Gen Surachate Hakpan and the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayuth Chan-ocha.

The protagonists are well known by their nicknames in Thailand of Big Joke and Big Too.

"Joke" is a kind of rice gruel and "Too" means to grab by force.

Yesterday the Central Administrative Court found for the prime minister and his office after the policemen took them to court over his abrupt transfer two years ago.

Big Joke was suddenly removed from his IB post and given a clerical job in the PM's office.

He claimed that he sent a letter to the PM and his staff asking to be reinstated to the police force and when this didn't happen in a timely manner he took them to court claiming they had been negligent in their duties.

The court found that any delay did not amount to dereliction of duty, reported Daily News.

The ruling is now a moot point as the Lt-Gen has since been returned to a position as an advisor at RTP HQ in Pathumwan, Bangkok.

This may not be his lofty role of before but he is back in the fold working on police reform, notes ASEAN NOW.

Big Joke is one of Thailand's most recognisable police officers following stints as deputy in the tourist police and head of the IB.

In the tourist police, the controversial and charismatic officer was always rounding up foreigners and jetting here and there then holding press conferences.

In the IB he criticised the 2 billion baht Biometrics scheme and tried to stop the practice of tea money.

His removal from the force to the clerical role was never explained but many thought it was likely a high-up political decision after toes were stepped on.

Big Joke's car was shot up while he was in a "spa" in the Suriwong area of Bangkok and another high profile policeman lost his job temporarily after speaking out of turn over the matter.

Interesting, given how things transpired, and on another thread we get an article about the sponsored lip service by celebs re stopping cheating; the dichotomy between reality and facade is really rather striking.

It was all good, until he came for us too.  :1zgarz5:

His fall was faster than his rise.

went from captain of tourist police to a general and head of immigration in a matter of 12 months which would normally take at least 20 years

Written in Thai it's ตู่ which means false claim / assume ownership.

Certainly that is how Google is translating it, and here too:http://www.thai-language.com/default.aspx  but I suspect an accidental or more likely deliberate transcription. Thai chu len are "things" not characteristics and he has himself referred to as Luung Tu by PR efforts.

If I am wrong I will retract, but i am not yet sure I am and can't be bothered to get my Thai books out.

I very much doubt it's his actual 'chue len', rather a name he's been assigned by others.  I'm not particularly interested either way, just posting the way I understand it to be written and the way I have seen it written in Thai articles which don't bother with how westerners might choose to interpret the sound of Thai words.

Thai's also. I have seen wrong interpretations by educated native speaker Thais.

The story of all walks of Thai administration including the (Un)Civil Service; police; Immigration; banks; schools.  If any Thai had to work a European day, they'd die of exhaustion.

Oh dear, when did the fatal mutation in the Thai gene pool happen?

If you stand alone against Alibaba and its 40 thieves, it is hopeless.

And then again the very last warning:

Big Joke's car was shot up while he was in a "spa" in the Suriwong area of Bangkok.

Reminds me of the case in the south where Maj. Gen. Paween Pongsirin actively exposed human trafficking. He then had to flee to Australia.

He is back in charge of 'Police Reform'.  That's an even bigger joke as ' Police Reform' in Thailand is but a Myth; it has never happened and never will, he and anyone else who tries it will be dead first !

They snookered him good.

This is one of those situations where neither protagonist is worthy of supporting or being seen as the more worthy.

It’s like watching Man U versus Man City where you want both to lose and continue losing till the end of eternity.

There was once another police officer who made a very high and quick rise up to Pm ...., until the BKK Hiso  got scary about his influence on the majority of the Thai people ..... looks almost a "deja vu ".....so this time the Bkk Hiso elite handled quicker.....to avoid a rehearsal :whistling:

He was the person who screwed up getting retirement visas using proof of income, deserves every bad thing that happens to him and I hope there’s plenty more to come.
