Popular Post GammaGlobulin
I have a different view of Thailand than most of those who were born post-1955. I do not want to get into particulars here. All that I might say is that, now that I am rapidly approaching the end of my life, I have become sentimental about my times in Thailand, pre-1971. As we increasingly become aware, due to extreme overpopulation and inundating, overwhelming pollution, our beloved world which we once knew is now a distant memory. And, maybe the sea is rising. Some might say that things will get better, and that people in Thailand will ride Musk’s rockets to Mars. But I think such a thing may not happen in my lifetime. I really do not know what will happen during the next five years. All I know is that you can book your launch on a site like ISILAUNCH. So, the question is, do I really want to launch myself into orbit, so soon, before I die? I mean, I already know that I will be up there in space, eventually, for free. And, therefore, why should I pay to ride with Musk? Note: For those who might wish to get to space SOONER, then.... You can go onto one of Musk's sites and BOOK a LAUNCH. I will not provide the link to BOOK a LAUNCH, simply because I do not advocate going to space before you are ready, and before you have lived a full life down here on planet Thailand. 1 9
Popular Post GammaGlobulin
One of the nicest things about living in Asia, and especially living in Thailand, is that, when we become old and decrepit, and senile, there are no icebergs available which the younger generation can use to float us out to die, as sometimes happens in the far North. Popular Post herfiehandbag
I was born a couple of years after the span of dates you specify. Last year, a woman I know told me that life was simpler in Thailand, in 1971. No need to worry about much. She stated that there was no need to visit the Seven. Mostly, she enjoyed the vegetables she grew in her garden, and she also had enough leftover vegetables to barter them for rice. She told me that she wished she could return to those days. I know that she was sincere. What about you? Do you recall those days in Thailand? (Maybe, this is the understanding of our world that was mentioned in this topic. Maybe, this makes some sense.) Well no, in 1971 I was 14. Didn't do a lot of independent travel ( or vegetables) then! You will always find someone who harks back to " the good old simple times", invariably they omit to mention the poverty, lack of medical care, endemic diseases, shorter life expectation, child mortality and political savagery of those times. There is much to "tick" about here today, but people's lives are measurably better, despite 7/11 and Elton Musk's ambitions to scatter corpses all over space! I am 73, far from old and decrepit. And I have very fond memories of my pre-1967 teenage years when I was a struggling musician/student. Since then I have had reasonable success.

IMO no vast corporate enterprises selling us tooth rotting and diabetes causing overprocessed junk food in those happier days. Most, IMO, had enough land to grow all the veges needed and the time to do so. Even I was able to afford a 1/4 acre with house. Sadly, few can anymore. Agree, Some apparently are incapable of merely not reading posts from someone they are not appreciative of, and just have to post negatives about them instead of moving on to all those far more interesting and informative threads they prefer. It's like they are unable to not click on the threads. Perhaps they should discover how to use the ignore function. 8

I have nearly always lived in Bangkok: Terrible traffic - I mean the worst I have seen anywhere Pollution Basically just 3 beer choices The trots (diarrhoea) were like every other week Flooding in rainy season Missing so many flight dues to rain or traffic or both Roads inter province were terrible Poor healthcare BUT like you theres a sentimentalism about those things that we cannot turn the clock back on. The vibe and the feel, the true sense of adventure, the cheapness of everything, the abundant kindness shown by all (generally) to non-Thais. As for space, thats another mans journey. The snow runway at McMurdo was named after an American that died when his machine fell through the ice in 1956- I wonder what they will name after the first American to die in space? BTW the astronauts that died in the shuttle were not in space when it blew up.

In space, one can expect to be freeze-dried, due to low temperature and almost pure vacuum.

This constant harping back to " the good old simpler times" is particularly endemic on this forum. What amuses though is it is very specific rose tinted glasses that completely fail to mention the hardship of the time, the social disparity and the abject poverty experienced by most. Biological Diversity, anyone? E. O. Wilson, anyone? Carbon levels at 350ppm, anyone? Think again, please. But, I also completely understand your point concerning progress made raising us out of poverty, as well as antibiotics and vaccines, as well as great strides in education. But what is this compared to what some see as imminent? You are correct that, judging by most metrics, our world is improving dramatically, decade by decade.

vinci
people with that kind of age already gave up on the world already, don't worry by this rate we will destroy ourselves in a few 100 year, we are in our final stage of humanity, no water and food to feed the world, don't worry you're not missing out of anything, actually you're in a good spot right now, so enjoy yourself. Probably Tyson is speaking philosophically about 3 thousand years in the future. Three thousand years in the future, historically, is less than the age of stone henge, or the pyramids, or aphrodisiacs, or the blue pill. TV, three thousand years hence, will be around. So will I. GammaGlobulin
Musk never mentions the animals he will crowd into his rocket ship, two by two, on the way to Mars. GammaGlobulin
RED MARS GREEN MARS BLUE MARS Musk talks in parables, sometimes, after a good smoke. We all love Musk, even though he smokes too much, maybe. Like you, I have read Kim Stanley Robinson's three books. These three books are science fiction. And yet, after a good smoke, science fiction becomes reality. And, soon, we will all be living under the Regolith Soil on Mars, like moles. Or, so it is envisioned by Mr. Musk. (Musk should curb his enthusiasm for interstellar travel. If Musk can finally deliver a car that can park itself in a tight space in most underground parking lots, then... he is a genius.)
