Sidewalks are becoming a cycle lane.

Well today I took a walk from lower Sukhumvit Soi 4 to Suk Soi 24... normally you probably would not notice, but today the amount of cyclists using the footpaths was quite numerous.. I counted a total of 18 on that stretch, 4 were going against the direction of traffic, the bulk were going in the same direction of the traffic. When I refuse to give way in a typical part where there is only room for one person pass, I was met with a mouthful of abuse. Then you get the Lycra Clad mafia lot going hell for leather with total disregard to any others and probably also the consequences of their actions. Why on earth are they on the footpath, add together the motorcycle taxis and food delivery, to be honest it’s a nightmare. Then the new menace electric scooters, let’s see how that turns out when someone is seriously injured by those!

  • Not a cyclist.. if there was designated cycle lanes then thats not a problem, its the sudden mentality they have the right of way on what are FOOTPATHS.

  • That even exceeds the number of ladyboys and Nigerian weed dealers !

A lot of pavements/sidewalks in Bangkok are also designated BIcycle ways, but not all.

I cycle a lot, and although we like to maintain momentum it's only fair that pedestrians get right of way at all times and in all places.

It is the weekend, though and there are some right ????s out on bikes, especially the lycra gang. ????

Stand your ground and soak up the abuse. ????????????????????????????????

Or carry a large sticky out backpack and turn obligingly sideways as they get very near and sideswipe them!

Is the OP complaining because he is or isn't a cyclist?

Agree. More and more cyclists, mainly farangs using the pavement.

Not a solution but we walk along the "sky walk" now from near Nana all the way to Asoke and back. Usually empty, although with the parks being closed a few runners now use it as their exercise route

Avoiding all those deadly manhole covers wasn’t challenging enough. This is just another ‘wrinkle’ thrown into the mix.

Try to look at it as if you’re simply playing a game of ‘Frogger’, ‘Pac-Man’ or ‘Super Mario’.

If they made the sidewalks wider im sure cars would be mounting the footpaths knowing  Thailand

Definitely have seen more bikers using the pavements in the last few days, due to heavy flooding on the roads.

Hell for leather on a Bangkok footpath ? I doubt that very much !

I've always been told that Thailand is overrun with 'cycle paths'. Or have I been mishearing them?

????

If your trip outside was so miserable, next time just stay home.

i'm fairly certain that the odd soi side in that area on sukhumvit is a designated bike lane.  at one time, they had a painted lane on the sidewalk but it has faded away in most places.  i'm not sure about the even soi side.  i used to bike alot in the USA, alot of areas to ride w/o cars around (or people).  i did not wear the usual bike team uniform and rode a mountain bike, not a true road bike.

i don't quite get the OP comment about ride against traffic ?  people walk both ways on the sidewalk so a biker is riding both with some and against some pedestrian traffic.  i personally think a biker on the sidewalk should always yield to pedestrians.  it is primarily their space (the pedestrians), don't ride like a maniac.  stop your bike if necessary, it isn't a big deal to get going again.  if you are trying to set time records riding on the sidewalk, please stop that now.

They call them pavements (or sidewalks) elsewhere.

also found that a strong elbow good for breaking off the side mirror of a  car going opposite direction on single lane oneway road, also having half the car on the footpath... ( Soi 7 pattaya)

 - anyhow by the time the mirror hit the ground, the driver was finally sort of reacting by jumping on his brakes to obviously intend to outwardly   react 'negatively'

 - but I was lucky he was being herded along by the cars behind him doing the same thing - couldn't actually Stop

I'll keep that in mind, back in Glasgow, in fact the last time I was in Glasgow exactly two years ago, I sent a cyclist flying when he was riding straight towards me on the pavement. He wasn't very happy. ????

He's gone now it seems, but there was somebody rollerblading along lower Sukhumvit pavement at speed. His solution to not being able to stop was to push people out of the way. Perhaps some locals took exception to this and he got a nasty kicking and that is why I don't see him anymore.

You would be inviting a heap of trouble should the person you pushed badly injure themselves as a result.

Come to the Beach road promenade in Pattaya.

You get to dodge bicycles, motorcycles, and homeless beggars while walking along,  so peaceful and serene though  555

Lack of education / Training and different attitudes about life lead to a jaw dropping amount of disregard everywhere you go here, sadly.

Wether it’s a moron on their super loud, plastic motorbike with an excessively loud exhaust pipe hurdling down the road at 11 PM, or the clueless Thai driver that never yields to a pedestrian crossing the street or crosswalk, and sees nothing wrong with pulling up to a crosswalk smack dab in the middle while multiple people are crossing.

I wish I could say it’s because they just don’t care, but it’s more along the lines of they just do not know better. They don’t understand how riding a motorized vehicle on a sidewalk is a safety hazard, they don’t understand why pedestrians should always have the right of way, they don’t understand why speed limits are a thing.

A couple years ago when I was making use of border run land transport services in those crappy vans, and every time, the driver would always speed way too fast on the highway and switch lanes constantly without signaling. Everyone in the van was uncomfortable and felt uneasy, while the doofus driving didn’t care one bit. All us farang were puckering our B-holes on every lane switch, while the Thai driver didn’t seem to notice or care that they were driving recklessly. I will never get into those stupid border run vans again, just the feeling of mounting dread at every moment was enough to turn me off from it forever.

So Yeah...basically it’s cultural and it’s part of living here. T.I.T

They had a big push on this sometime ago but it seems that Mr Plod no longer bothers which is strange because in the area mentioned & lower Sukhumvit they must be hurting with bars & nightclubs not putting anything into the potty at present

Hit them with your zimmerframe.

I brought that up with Jack himself, pointing out how dangerously fast the driving was - his response was sorry, we have to drive that fast to get there before the Russian bus from Pattaya as if they get there first our processing is delayed by 2 hours.
