A number of these features are exposed and can be amended by using a plug in such as Fasterfox.

Breaking into a bank's database, or taking down a webserver is hacking. Modifying Firefox's alt:config is called tweaking. These days even putting a pink case on your iPod seems to get described with the term "hacking". :o

FWIW Hacking was a perfectly valid term until it became the term de jour for lazy journalists, looking for an easy description for everything from script-kiddies through to digital crackers.

The last above is the correct term for those who abuse a system, hacking is for those who exploit a system {as in the original article}. But there again I can remember when gay meant happy, and it's not that long ago. :o

Hacking is a common word, not to long ago this word, was normally used to indicated changing source or settings which without a special function where not accessible to regular users.

Tweaking on the other hand is more playing around, using the settings available with the standard user interface.

For the NON techies, I use a program called FireTune. I tried another program sometime back and it worked but created a lot of problems. It would no longer open some sites and Hotmail was one of the sites that wouldn't open. So far with FireTune, I have seen no problems and it DOES work.

Firetune is excellent. I use it to tune every new install of Firefox and then tweak from there. FT immediately speeds up Firefox a great deal.
