REUTERS/Soe Zeya Tun AYUTTHAYA, Thailand (Reuters) - Several temples in Thailand's historic city of Ayutthaya were underwater on Wednesday, as heavy monsoon rains flooded provinces across the country. More than 40 temples in Ayutthaya, home to ancient Buddhist temples, ruins, and monuments, have been affected by the floods, the city administration said. At one of the temples, Wat Satue, monks paddled small boats through water that ranged from thigh deep to neck level. "This is the worst flood in 10 years," its abbot Phra Kru Pariyat Yathikhun told Reuters by phone, adding that surrounding communities were also flooded. Authorities have issued flood warnings across much of the country over the past two weeks as Tropical Storm Dianmu caused flash floods in 32 of Thailand's 76 provinces, killing nine people and affecting nearly 300,000 households. Sixteen provinces were still flooded on Wednesday, including Ayutthaya, and authorities warned of another potential tropical storm that is forecast to reach the northeast of the country next week. A 2 meter high cement wall surrounded the entire property of which it looked like 20 homes were in different stages of being built. The water on the outside was at least a meter deep, and the entrance Area had been sandbagged but water was still flowing into the build area over the top of the bags. Seems like the bottom floor of the houses will be under water. Wouldn't want to have been someone that pre-paid for the build not knowing they were in a 10 year flood plain.....ugh. Actually the main problem is both dams because they cannot stop either dams from releasing water. The Ubolratana is releasing water that is entering the Chi river downstream of the main flood front and that water is acting like a brake and slowing the flow of the water up stream of the river and not allowing the flood water to flow away quick enough and the water from the Chonnabot is being fed by the Chiayaphum flood waters and that is coming in behind the Khon Kaen flood waters. If they don't get the water at the front moving quicker then the water at the rear will build up higher and the water at the front is from Ubolratana dam. They are going to set up 12 water pushers at the front of the flood to push the water to Maha Sarahkam dam so that the water level at the rear will drop. At the moment the Ubolratana dam is at 90% and building up so at the moment they can control the water coming out of Ubolratana but once it hits 100% then there is no control of what comes over that wall and unless they get that water moving quickly before next week when there is more monsoonal rain to hit this area there is going to be some really serious flooding Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
