BANGKOK, 8 October 2021 (NNT) - The Ministry of Justice has set a goal to seize 10 billion baht from drug sellers next year. On a separate note, the ministry said the new narcotics bill could help reduce the number of convicts and relieve density at prisons.

Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsutin announced the outcomes of Thailand’s narcotics prevention and suppression, while outlining the new narcotics code that will enable agencies to adopt a more proactive approach to drug suppression.

According to the announcement, this new narcotic code bill will help officials better track down key players in drug trade and enable retroactive seizure of assets.

The Ministry of Justice hopes a new punishment guideline under the new bill would give convicts a chance at redemption, while the special parole eligibility would help reduce the number of inmates at prisons by at least 20,000.

The Minister of Justice said anti-drug officials will now focus on seizing the assets of those involved with drug trade, as the new code enables up to 10 years of retroactive charges.

The Ministry of Justice has set a target to seize 10 billion baht worth of assets from drug rings with 5% of the amount at 500 million baht to be given as rewards for informants.

The minister on this occasion expressed his satisfaction with the work of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) in the past year, notably international cooperation in the suppression of international drug networks, investigations leading to the seizure of assets worth 7.3 billion baht, rehabilitation campaigns for drug addicts, the legalization of Kratom, and the drafting of 3 new drug-related laws.

  • It is farcical enough for TAT to invent future visitor numbers at the moment but for the MOJ to forecast drug haul figures is just beyond comprehension!  Are they taking some of the drugs themsel

Are they taking some of the drugs themselves?

Ambitious to say the least, but why pay only 5% as a bounty for turning someone in.  Is their life worth so little, and I say that based upon the fact that RTP Drug suppression Officer Captain Joe Ferrari got 40% of the net proceeds for the selling of the confiscated cars he seized.  Who is taking the bigger chance of being snuffed out for being a snitch....hmmm

On the other hand I set a Target of getting my extension of stay completed this month, so whose goal do you think will be met mine or the Ministry of justices.

Better to decriminalize drugs, control them, minimise harm, and tax them and sieze money that way..

They love it! They all do! The war on drugs feeds private government officials and secret security programs...Its the heart of corruption. An international cancer.

Start checking the RTP as they have a key role in the drugs and the dealers. I know that a dealer is getting away  with it every time he is caught for 10-15k... and he keeps going on .. Never understand why the police let him o and not bring him to court. I know corruption, but still why has the police this power

I don't think I've ever seen this kind of projection before.  It's usually something like:

the estimated amount of drugs being trafficked is xxx amount, and in the next 12 months we hope to reduce that by 20%

Read the quote carefully.  It is about amassing cash and property, and offering a piece of the pie to those who help them do so.  Stopping drug tracking?  That's off-topic.

Well, I guess it is slightly admirable that they are not doing the usual pandering (practiced world-wide) of "protecting our youth from the drug menace" etc.

"A bulging pocket makes the easy life" sings a police officer in a certain Bertolt Brecht play.

Joe Ferrari is toast.  His crime?  Failure to send brown envelopes upstairs.

dont  think the rtp  will  be  happy  about that

I think it is a public notification to address all drug traders that the brown envelopes have to be thicker in the future.

Shouldn’t they also go for people who have made huge amounts of money in dealing drugs involving other countries like Australia for example

No, it was not a lack of brown envelopes.  It was getting caught on camera that toasted him!

As the DOJ seems to be interviewing Joe publicly, what are they actually going to charge him with - littering or non environmental use of plastic bags?

He obviously is an earner.

keep the rest

Sounds like a good year for plastic bag companies, they'd better ramp up their production, quick...

They might raise more money quicker if they didn’t have stupid rules that allow the police to collect a large amount of cash from sold assets that have been seized !!

You have to wonder how this very incentive for corruption and dishonesty came about.

By someone who thought how can we line our own pockets by making it look like we are actually doing a good job catching criminals ! ????

Unfortunately over time the people have realised the police are doing it for cash incentives and not for the benefit of the country’s safety .

Prizing it out of the hands of the police and army will be the most challenging part ????

The RTP know who the big players are, but seem to only catch the mules.

The "players" being untouchable.

Judiciary and RTP alike.

Not to difficult to understand why they let him go each time, considering you answered your own question...

While setting a quota for next year is odd enough - if they hit their quota in June will they stop their efforts?

This incentive scheme is what got Giuseppe Ferrari in trouble - reward on repo of illegal supercars.

In normal times the Thai mafia just shares the profits with the government/military/police. My guess is that this is just a stunt to jack up the protection skim from 15% to 25%.

More likely a combination, not enough flowing upwards sorted by a covert video, unfortunately that killed the golden goose - just shows some people aren't that smart.

Say what ?!?!

The plan has been made!

Quickly now, just enough time to stock up on plastic bags before the race is on!!!
