The government has made plans to handle a surge in cases following the reopening of the country’s border on Monday, a senior doctor told Thai Enquirer.

Thailand opened its borders to vaccinated travelers on Monday from a list of ‘safe countries’ in a bid to kickstart the economy.

Travelers entering the kingdom will be able to travel freely after a negative result from a PCR test. The move, the government admits, will likely see a surge in new cases.

Why will there be a surge in cases from visitors that are thoroughly tested before and after they fly? There will be some that will not show signs till later on but any surge will likely be from movement of unvaccinated/untested locals and from porous borders.

unvaccinated Thais can and do move freely within the country and are being encouraged to do so with various government schemes but it will be the fully tested fully vaccinated foreigners blamed for any covid spread  - you couldn't make this ## up

So very true, Covid is rampant, only miniscule testing and a vaccine program largely with Sinovac.

The trickle of genuine tourists arriving are walking into a Covid hotbed and really will need good insurance or deep pockets.

Would the preparation be 1m carboard beds and some tents ????

Yeah, but who will suffer most from the surge, will it be unvaccinated Thais catching the virus from fully-vaccinated foreign tourists, or perhaps (and more likely) it might be the large, unvaccinated part of Thai society that will come off the worst? Only 43% have been fully-vaccinated to date, but no doubt you'll remember this government target, repeated time and time again...

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha detailed in a statement ..... the country is to receive 105.5 million doses, exceeding an initial target of 100 million, which will allow for the vaccination of 50 million people or 70 percent of the population.

+ 'predicted' surge means 100% chance it will happen now

Really nice way to welcome tourists to Thailand. Blame it on the unwashed, dirty Farangs.

Looking at the pic I’d say the surge will come from those who don’t wear their mask properly

Yes, that’s why the article said:

“The surge wont come from the arriving tourists but the service industry that supports them and from the behavior of locals,” a senior doctor at Siriraj told Thai Enquirer.

Helps if you actually read the article rather than rushing to be first to post for “likes” and calling others “idiots”

You know expecting anyone to actually read anything other than the headline before they post for likes is too much to ask of the TVF populace.

And what does this mean? It means infected foreigners will spread the disease amongst the locals contacting with them in service industry (massage, bars, restaurants etc.). The source of the possible spike are FOREIGNERS.

Would you like him to explain it even easier for you?

I think you should read him again. Why does he claim that the spike will come from the Thais who serve foreigners? Specifically - foreigners! Why not from any other group of Thais?
What this doctor actually says - the foreigners are the source of infection, but the ones who will spread it and cause the spike in the “clean” population are the Thais who work with foreigners.
A typical Thai way of thinking: a-priori clean Thais VS a-priori dirty non-Thais.

Not exactly, the surge has happened in Israel, and Singapore, Denmark when it opened said , we know our health system can cope.

I think Denmark would know, I also think that Thailand is aware that case spike probably will happen , but they may be reliant upon the covid insurance policies to place the paid for spikes in hospital, I do not know how they might deal with local poor people if this happens maybe plan B has not been finalized.

No surge of international tourists--zero bookings in CM--equals likely no surge in cases.

I will take a tarot card reading , most airlines will scrap their old planes, probably in the dessert now.

Big funds will invest in newer planes , buy out the wrecked bankrupt airlines, and hotels, you will never be allowed onto a plane or into MC Donalds again without a vaccine passport. what hope does LOS have against these odds.

How could that happen when its supposed to be 70% vaccinated? Oh yes, only Bangkok and Phuket have achieved that status.

You mean after massaging the figures down to help push the re-opening you will then allow them to rise again back to the true figure?

Incoming tourists are not going to effect the infection levels, and Thais are now free to travel as much as they were before.. so where is the surge coming from?

You are confused

Those countries actually opened including the UK, do you think the current surge in the UK is due to foreign tourists - it would be rather foolish to think that.

Thailand is claiming that opening up the country to foreign tourists is going to cause a surge - that message is wholey incorrect and foolhardy, myself and many others on here have been saying for weeks - Thailand should fully open up internally before opening the floodgates to foreign tourists - they are incorrectly doing things in reverse, how can you open externally when you are shut internally, it is stupidity beyond belief

  • Popular Post

lets not forget why Thailand is far behind other countries

This government severely messed up their vaccine procurement and are 100% to blame for the mess Thailand is in right now

70,80 ,90 not working to well. Israel now has jabbed 4 million with a third booster, was on RNZ national news today.

One thing sticking out like dogs bllks is that the hospital numbers are very low in NZ, only the elderly and those with comorbidities are in Hospital.

Most are recovering at home in self isolation.

But that is enough to, lockdown the economy , people, jobs, airlines are going to the wall, now New Zealanders in Auckland are doing what the Aussies did, and holding mass protests, people getting jailed for protesting against mandates, that say if you don't get a vaccine certificate no job, no Mc Donald's ,no fly anywhere.

Also in that news report about Israel was that the efficacy of vaccine fades, so that after 6 months you may be as low as 30% or less --- not enough they said so thats why Israel is going for Jab no 3.

Now look at the insane vaccine roll out that went for 80%, by the time they get there, those that got jabbed first, have low efficacy are at risk of reinfection, or serious illness and can hurtle through the country and re-infect others.

These are mad times ,I only hope that the madness stops and treatment becomes the norm.

My wife's mother and brother, work in the markets, have never been vaccinated, all they do is drink heaps of ginger tea and take a few vitamin supplements- D being one of them, although I worry about them heaps I can not convince them of taking a vaccine or not, they like to do it their way, and so far so good, but not what I recommend personally to anyone as people make their own choice, unless mandated.

I'm not confused, it's not about foreign tourists spreading covid, it's about what has happened in Israel and Singapore and may happen in Thailand, not because of tourists, but because people might think that all is ok now, and through caution to the wind.
