Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday released a teenager from prison who is the son of a former CNRP activist Kak Kumphea after he has served his time as required by the court.

Court clerk Long Sokha told Khmer Times yesterday that the sentence given by the court to the accused Kak Sovannchhay, 17, was set at only half of a minor’s sentence which is stipulated by law and the implementation of his sentence in prison was only a part of his sentence while the rest was suspended. He added that Sovannchhay was released yesterday from prison after he completely served the term of his sentence.

“He has now been released from prison and handed over to his guardians to take care of him as the court ruled,” he said. Phnom Penh Municipal Court on November 1 sentenced Sovannchhay to eight months in prison but the term of his sentence shall be implemented for only four months and 15 days in prison, the rest was of suspended.
