More than 36 million baht to be used for CCTV installation in Phuket

Phuket province has accumulated more than 36 million baht to be spent on the installation of Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) across the island for public safety.

The Deputy Governor of Phuket, Mr. Worapot Rattasima, says the Municipal of Phuket has given 16 million baht to Phuket Provincial Police, and the money will be used to procure and install CCTVs in 48 locations in Patong and Karon districts of Phuket province. Four security control offices have been set up on the island along with the operation control center located on the 4th floor of Phuket Provincial Police Station. The project is still incomplete, and cooperation from the local units is needed for public safety.

However, many districts have received the budget. The Municipal of Phuket has received 10 million baht while Patong district has received 4.2 million baht. Tambon Wichit Administrative Organization has received 1.98 million baht, and 20 million baht has been allotted to Tambon Rawai Administrative Organization. The CCTVs will be installed in 16 tourist attractions of Phuket. The cameras have the zoom utility and can rotate 360 degrees.

Big Brother is watching! Not sure if having loads of CCTV cameras is a good or bad thing, afterall, who watches the watchers!

(I may be wrong, but) I suspect that their principal use will be as aids to the investigation of reported crime, although the setting-up of four security control offices suggest there will also be an element of live monitoring. Instead of waving to the World in the Mai Thai bar, you can wave to the boys in brown... Anyway, thumbs-up from me.

a scattering of them around Patong will be a very good thing! People have wanted a way to deal with the TukTuk drivers .... well! This could be it for the more agregious issues!
