Preserving our culture is more important than personal freedoms, the Thai Ministry of Culture said, in response to a push for the legalization of pornographic production and content within the country.

“There might be examples from abroad that this can be done freely but the Ministry of Culture insists that people should preserve the good culture more than freedom,” said Itthiphol Khunpleum, the Minister of Culture, said on Wednesday.

He said he disagreed with the proposed amendment of Section 287 of the Criminal Code, which bars the production and distribution of pornographic materials because it is not suitable for Thailand.

No it ****** well isn't.

Is this the Thai culture that is demonstrated by the highest levels of Thai society?  If so, I don't see a problem.

Personally speaking, I've always given a toss when it comes to porn.

Pleased you interpreted the pun.

Is that why corruption is widely practiced...because it is rooted in Thai culture?

I don’t mind they don’t legalize porn, as long as they keep the ping-pong shows as a part of “Thai-culture”…

He probably could have found a better way to say this, even though most understand that "culture" here MUST be controlled. Those in control feel the populace is pretty much too stupid to know what's best for themselves.

Thai Personal Freedoms has got to be one of the shortest books ever written. It's a cartoon book, showing bowing, wai-ing and prostrating.

Thailand: The only country in the world where paying for a BJ is just as easy as buying a pack of chewing gum at the corner 7-11, but you're not allowed to visit pornhub.com. ????

This is typical Chinese (Communism) style of controlling the population .

Stick your culture where the sun doesn't shine.

He is right from his point of view and his culture. Not yours, not western culture like US where individual freedom trumps any sort of other culture value.

I dare say nearly everyone believes their culture (the one they were raised in) is right and best.

Of course I get frustrated with Thai culture from time to time & remind self "It's not better, or worse. It's different".

I strongly suggest reading Edward T Hall's book "Beyond Culture"Beyond Culture PDF

You'll be reminded that, historically, different will not be tolerated by those highly sophisticated and civilised cultures. ????

So I guess part of that Thai culture is all the soap places TIT

Sure Culture is more important for Minister of Culture--if he/she wanna keep job.

This is the SAME Culture which allows The females in the family to be abused and the corruption of Officials across the board to continue unabated, plus the double standards regarding tourists. GREAT, now we all know.

Porn can take it or leave it .

The Government has shown its true colours again.

Agree

Culture - bunch of backwards, outdated reasons to live in the Stone Age.

Status Quo must be preserved - which abhors anything 'different' - deemed radical and subversive, because it is.

When temples appear to be more places of business than of worship, zoos, crocodile farms and snake farms care little for the welfare of the animals they display and schools seem to exist to enrich their owners rather than the minds of their students, I wonder what part of Thai culture the Minister thinks is worthy of protection?

I'm all for pre-Phibun culture. Would be great to see all the topless Isaan ladies.

I doubt this has much to do about preserving Thai culture but more to do with preserving the status quo. Granting freedoms to the masses could lead to loss of control from the his-so Thai elite who want to preserve their inherited status.

This man has no idea about the 20 and 21st century. You can maintain culture and have personal and community freedom. Dictatorial control changes culture to the needs and wants of those in power.

Not fit for the job. Another square peg in a round hole like most government appointees.

Then they need to legalize prostitution, as it is a very large part of current Thai culture.

“Thailand is noted for being a male-dominated patriarchal society, and the gender roles and expectations for Thai men and women differ accordingly. Despite the fact that many Thai men in the past had households with many wives ..."

Of course they do not want to change this ... it is part of their culture .

Your culture is evident in every seaside resort, or city locations:

Walking street, Bangla road, Soi Cowboy, Nana, Patpong to name but a few.

Everything you can see on "Only fans" is available for rent every night.
Whats the difference between buying it on the street or watching it in the privacy of your own home?
