As Thailand contemplates a legal casino the RTP warn against the perils of gambling

Just a day before Thailand's politicians are set to debate opening a legal casino in the country a top Royal Thai police spokesman has told his compatriots about the evils of gambling.

Moves are afoot in the house tomorrow to open a casino in Thailand. High up on the list of locations is Hua Hin where an MP wants to open an "entertainment complex" for high rollers.

But now Pol Maj-Gen Yingyot Thepjamnong has warned  betting mad Thais about gambling and assured them that the RTP chief Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk is determined to stop all online gambling.

Yingyot said that gambling ruins lives, puts you in abject debt and penury, is absolutely no path to riches and if caught you can go to jail in Thailand.

This pronouncement followed a 2 million baht gold robbery in Chumphon where the suspect said he needed the money to pay off gambling debts, reported Daily News.

ASEAN NOW notes that the RTP pronouncements should be seen in the light of frequently made claims in Thailand alleging that the police themselves either turn a blind eye to illegal casinos in their jurisdictions or are actively engaged in profiting by them.

When caught or suspected the standard practice is to transfer chiefs of police to inactive posts.

Until things blow over.

That's one thing you can bet on!

Would this be the same RTP that runs their own Gambling Dens all over the country and doesn't like the idea of legal competition ?

Oh Yes! This man is an expert on gambling. Everyone can hear that! ????

He should have a little bit of a more philosophic way of looking at the matter, and also base that philosophy on pure facts. As a fact there is only a small fraction of player in the world that have or creates a gambling habit that leads to e problem. Here we are talking about 0,4 - 0,5 % of all players. So, there is absolutely no reason to blame gambling for the problem. Here is human responsibility and self-control to blame.

In other words, the Thai population has to be more educated and learn how to take responsibility for themselves, their families and actions. Gambling has never been meant to see as a way to riches, which clearly shows what level of education he in to be placed in. here it´s meant to be all about fun and entertainment with a very small chance to win big. That´s what Thai people have to learn to understand. Gambling is not the enemy. Lack of education and the mindset to always runaway from responsibility is!

As the BIB currently hold the national gambling franchise I can see why he's worried.

He'll get to know that "kicked in the goolies" feeling that former holders of McDonald's and 7/11 franchisees have felt over the last 18 months.

Meanwhile he's got his accountant busily iterating the numbers to see how they can afford to resubmit a better franchise tender assuming TAT forecasts of cash-cow tourists that aren't and won't be coming to Thailand.   Pigs, lipstick, and all that.

What took them so long? legal Casinos are the best money makers any one can have, it's like a factory for printing money, this country have many illegal ones who rakes in billions every year so com'on Thailand get on the "lets make our people even poorer" and start casinos all over the country..

There was a new roadway built near us a couple of years ago asking about where it went to as it seemed nowhere, the answer was to the Police 'casino'. Probably not much more than a gambling den but the road cost a bit!

Maybe it's still worth keeping that condo in Pattaya after all.

This one.

Along with the requisite loan sharking. Smaller dens are operated as franchisees from the franchise holder: the RTP.

Any legalized gambling here will be for foreigners/tourists.

Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]

Croupier: Your winnings, sir.

Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.

Legalization and regulation is probably the way to go here. These activities are going to happen anyway, and at least this way they can occur with some oversight, in a larger and more value-additive manner, and in partnership with official programs to help problem gamers.

We all know why you are warning about this, no need to disguise.

Two sayings come to mind over this

People in Glasshouses should not throw stones

Pot calling the kettle black

The biggest corrupt Government Agency is telling us Gambling is illegal and dangeropus.

NOW just HOW many illegal places overseen by individual Police Officers or stations have been implicated in shady places over the past few years eh ??????????

AND no-one has as yet gone to jail......Truly Amazing Thailand !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some years ago they built one of the biggest hotels in the world (at that time) and they built it miles out of town. The Ambassador City hotel owners must be praying that at long last they will get a license for a Casino.

More like they are concerned once legal they will be losing another 'side income' option!!! 5555????????????????

I too think this is not a good think for Thailand. When I lived in Perth Australia I went to the Casino often, not for placing a bet but for dining ,the food was great there. The number of Asians that where there all the times that I went there was a worry just way too many. One time I seen  I a Asian lady crying and I asked what's wrong she said she borrowed money on her house to gamble and yes she lost it all. Things are bad enough with so many out of work here. So lets not add to the problem.

Yes indeed, where I used to live in Issan some years ago now, before moving to Cambodia, the local RTP ran the illegal gambling dens!! In fact one of the family (now deceased) was a retired RTP Officer and managed the local casino on behalf of the Provincial RTP. This particular casino was no "shed", it was a "warehouse" operating 24/7!!

additional information

Isn't it at least worth trying. At least the government could get some revenue. If politicians are worried that the casino would not be good for Thai citizens, simply require a foreign passport to enter the casino.

the biggest evil is with legal casinos... no more pocketmoney

ah... the perils of gambling so vividly highlighted late one afternoon in a soi near my apartment...

the soi stall holders like to play dominoes and bet on the games, 10 baht a go i believe. this harmless, to anyone with any sense, activity brings social interaction and a little excitement into otherwise quite dull and boring lives. on this particular afternoon, as the stallholders were enjoying a few games who should appear at the entrance to the soi but a squad of the RTP clearly intent on raiding this den of iniquity. cue pandemonium as the RTP approached the game players dispersed in a great flurry of activity. the soi runs alongside a klong and due to the narrowness of the soi not all could flee down the soi and ended up jumping into the klong and swimming to the far bank. it was a hilarious spectacle. the perils of gambling indeed.

Bingo! They and other 'untouchables', who will never allow casinos to be legalised. Those who wish to use casinos can go to most (all?) other countries in the region.

Or having a Thai wife or GF

Of course the plods don't want legal casinos to take away the billions they make from illegal casinos.  If they actually tried to prevent gambling, their view might be taken more seriously.

I think what these clowns are saying is, it is dangerous for us, if you gamble in a legal, state sponsored casino. It could result in a dramatic drop in earnings for our franchisees. We would not like that.

Never going to happen, too many people, mostly the RTP will loose their income if they legalize it.

'the RTP warn against the perils of gambling' in any location not owned by them.
