Thai government pushes booster shots as Omicron worries fuel response

The Thai government is encouraging Thais in at-risk categories to seek out a third booster shot as a new variant of concern has decision-makers on edge.

Just over 57 per cent of the population have now received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine with that number increasing everyday.

The World Health Organization recommended this past week booster shots to people in at-risk categories while it warns world leaders that a new Omicron covid variant first found in South Africa could pose a risk to global pandemic recovery.

Department of Medical sciences Director-General Supakit Sirilak said his department has been constantly checking the genomes of the coronavirus and feeding reports into the GISAID global database

It would be interesting to know what percentage of cases Thailand does actually sequence. South Africa was very fortunate in finding Omicron due to its very low sequencing percentage.

In Thailand, Myanmar exodus a lifeline for COVID-battered economy

The kingdom, still Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy despite last year suffering its worst contraction since 1997, is trying to reboot after a draining battle to control COVID-19.

To do so it urgently needs hundreds of thousands of cheap manual labourers from neighbouring Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

But sourcing such labour during a pandemic is complicated, with fears uncontrolled migration may lead to a surge in COVID cases that ultimately forces the country to close down once more.
