I only know of one friend who went back to USA and I think after a year he is rather bored and my guess is he was happier here...

 

If you have friends who have returned to the motherland, do you think they are happier back there? 

only one guy I know of. A good friend of mine lived in Thailand for a few years, was already married to a Thai lady but she had lived with him a while in the NE of UK. They bought a house near Rayong and after his wife gave birth, he was out ASAP with family back to the UK.

We met up for a drink the night before he flew home. He was so negative about almost everything in Thailand. I asked if there wasnt something positive he was going home with after his time here and he replied he had a vague sense of having lived somewhere tropical. That was it.

This was years ago, i still recieve messages about how he absolutely made the right decision to go home, couldnt be happier etc. 

Each to thier own and the best of luck to him.

Only problem is, he put the seeds of doubt into my head.

Some should never live anywhere except their home country as not mentally capable of adjusting to elsewhere.

I'd go back to LOS to live in a heartbeat if it were possible for me to do so. No matter how "bad" it got, it was still better for me.

HA.  The ones I know are in bad marriages, never have sex and hate life.  They only stay married because of all the money they will lose if they divorce.  They act old and depressed. They envy me and my life, but most of their wives don't like me.  Could careless, it is funny grow a pair dude dump your old lady come here and experience some fun in your golden years.

I've got Dutch and Canadian friends stuck back home.  When I speak to them and ask "how are things" I get a tirade of dissatisfaction and frustration that only varies in their use of vulgarities and obscenities - the two cultures obviously have different preferences.

 

Both have little regard for their respective governments' totalitarian actions.  

 

 

A mixture of falangie friends only know of one who went back stayed in UK with his Thai son. 

Itailian guy no way would go back home. 

Two guys from Switzerland wouldn't go back. 

Two guys from UK been coming for 20 years or so work UK and come Thai and stay with family as long as they can before going back work, and they will retire here when they can. 

A German retired goes back and forth 50/50.

A Norway guy never wants go back home. 

A Finland guy retired wouldn't go back home. 

When I left UK to retire here I felt like I had broken out of UK prison because if I'd of stayed probably UK would of swallowed my money and I would not have been able to go anywhere. 

I couldn't think of anything worse. 

 

I'd be suicidal 

We end up spending half the year in Thailand and half in my home country.  Can’t speak for others but I am certainly happier in my home country … and my Thai wife of 22 years happier in her home country.

The US that I grew up in doesn't exist anymore.

   There is nothing to go back to.

I think this is a loaded question because a significant percentage of repatriation happens because of negative events. In other words they would have preferred to stay BUT

 

ran out of money

fled legal trouble

visa denials

health crisis

relationship meltdown

needing to care for a relative back home.

Etc.

 

So naturally most such people will be less happy back home.

it's actually better in some ways, doesn't mean I don't miss stuff in Thailand. Here is the things that improved:

 

1. Better food quality, and cheap

2. Better service in restaurant, and still cheap

3. Public services not served by complete retards

4. No need for immigration non-sense

5. No more stress with THB fluctuations ????

6. School for kids cheap or free, with better teachers

7. Free flow of cheap wines and import beers, better quality, and cheap

 

overall definitely a plus, I think "expats" who have stayed too long are being "gas lighted" into thinking they have the best deal, forgetting that Thailand has dramatically changed in a decade and that the country they moved in is not the same.

 

I thought Europe was worse a decade ago, and it was, but things have improved a lot here. Can't say the same thing about Thailand.

 

There is no improvement in Thailand, and that's the core of it ????

 

Know of one case, guy came here some 9 years ago, single, met a local  girl, she had 2 kids from  former hubbie.  Married her.    She had  nice house,  he   did a lot of work  around the place, bought   car etc,  took them all on numerous holidays  Thailand and overseas, and back to his country.     Just   preferred back home, could see    a better future for her kids, as his missus and kids obviously did as well,  back there  some time now. All very settled and happy.

Me, been here many years now, relatively happy,  wouldnt mind going  home, permanently, gloss has worn off long ago, but wife  too attached to her kids/grandkids, extended family, and I know she would miss them.

I dont think, for those that have left, its a matter of being disgruntled or cheesed of, more the  case of remembering  when they were young(er)  and what things were like in their home country then.   unfortunately they forget,  things were always  great when you were young and carefree.

 

 

The people i know that had to go back did so because of health and money (only know 3). They miss Thailand and were happier here but when you cant afford it or your health is failing Thailand is not the place to be.

Also kids are a thing that often makes people go back, a person I know from Singapore is going back as he is starting a family schools here are too expensive and not good.

Have two mates went back to Australia, one in New South Wales the other Queensland, that was just before they shut it down.

 

Both have regretted it dearly.

I think with medical and insurance requirements and ever changing visa stuff for me Thailand is becoming more of a 50/50 country

 

i have lived and worked here 23 years

i like the tropical lifestyle but miss the ease of home and its food n beer and  more importantly home  country's social benefits

 

i love where i live for its location

i have one great expat friend the other expats i would go out of my way to avoid

Thais im not fussed with them

 

I have a thai family ..i would miss my dogs terribly

another thing,

 

1. free healthcare

2. no more work permit non-sense

3. No censure on internet, complete freedom of expression

4. No censure on Porn ????

5. Road safety

6. Less noises and polution in the cities, more space for green and parks

7. Better culture, can actually visit monuments and places, not shopping malls, or pushy and noisy and heavily promoted/sponsored public events

Actually I tend to prefer the older definition of expats, whereby very few here are actually expats , and yes almost none of us are immigrants, correctly speaking, either. But enough semantics ????

It's been my extended and particular experience that an overwhelming percentage don't have the social and cognitive skills to adjust and acclimated - full of the ingrained angst, hatred, ignorance and cultural comparative values. 

 

Not just applying to Thailand, but anywhere that's not home [or non-Occidental] country like. 

I've witnessed and observed these types of creatures, the world over, forever - 

Ask me next year 3th quarter ..., as i am still here now ????

I’m living in France, in the pays de loire in an area called the ‘vendee’ it’s a beautiful area to live, lots of open spaces and many great beaches close by, the food and the wine and beer is a good price, the wine is very cheap and Good ????????, I have three friends that are moving back to the Uk they are all moving back in January 2022, the biggest reason they state is that they are getting on ( in their early 70’s) and that they miss their grandkids and their own children, it’s also expensive here in France a weekly shop is a lot more expensive than doing a weekly shop in Tesco or Asda..so that’s their reasons. I like Thailand but not sure I can live there permanently, the girlfriend loves coming to France and we both agree to spend maybe 7 months of the year in Thailand and 5 months ( summer months) in France so we get the beautiful weather and food of Thailand most of the time and also the summer here in the vendee, France has great health care and approximately 80% is covered by the government and the other 20% is up to the individuals to get covered on a private health insurance scheme, it just gives me the security of knowing if I’m ill or involved in an accident I will get an ambulance ride to the hospital rather than the back of a taxi or the back of a pick up..I love Thailand but it has many drawbacks as you get older and your health isn’t as good

No , some just get tired  after being long time here  by seeing  all is declining whiteout no expectations of improving . 

 

"Adapting" to that is the Zombie syndrome skills factor ....., congrats you can do that ????

I live 6 months a year in thailand..thats enough for me.Thats let me keep my benefits in my country.

I meet some foreigners who moved permantly to thailand,and many of them regrets the day they need help from their embassy in Bangkok.If u dont pay tax to ur country of origin dont expect they will help u.

More happy today can drink a beer in my village restaurant the first time for nearly a year. you ????
