The Phuket Chamber of Commerce Vice chairman Chavana Kiatchavanasewe called for modern trade retailers to pay tax to the local government. He pointed out that those retailers effect small shops and that they create large amounts of waste on the island. He also proposed delay of any more approval for mega–retail stores until the Retail Trade Act takes effect. Tesco Lotus, one such store, informed Andaman News that its hypermarket in Phuket already paid signage tax at over 200,000 baht in 2006 and property tax of over 5 million baht in 2006. All such funds are used for local infrastructure improvements and basic local services. In addition 13 million baht or 14.2% of 94 million baht of Value Added Tax (VAT) collected by the store on customer purchases in 2006 was paid to local authorities. Tesco Lotus uses the e-revenue scheme of the Revenue Department which treats each store as a separate entity for tax purposes. It said it has constantly sought ways to increase the share of taxes paid to local authorities of communities it serves, as a responsible and committed member.
